Do You Need a HSC Tutor?

As John C. Maxwell says: "The difference between average people and achieving people is their perception of and response to failure".Have you gotten frustrated with some of the HSC® Exam courses and want to get a tutor? Are you wondering whether tutoring actually works?  

That is a hard question to answer. Depending on your personality and what your goals are, tutoring can be useful or a total waste of time. As Martin Scorsese says: "Cinema is a matter of what's in the frame and what's out".As long as you get what you want, it doesn't matter how you achieve your goal.

  Let's consider three different main types of students:

1. Students with a poor understanding of the subject and less motivated:       

Advantages of Tutoring:  

• Have someone to help you with your problems
• Weekly extra work, tutoring, might be enough to give you some motivation to do your study more efficiently
• Having a professional to talk to, always helps to digest complex ideas mush faster

 Disadvantages of Tutoring:

• Bad tutors may do more harm than good. They can confuse you even more.

To gain the most out of your tutoring, first make sure you have a proper tutor, from reliable companies. Second, ask your tutor as many questions as you can. For instance, ask them about any content in the textbook or curriculum you have difficulty with or any question in the book that you don't understand. The first step to having successful tutoring is that you have to make sure you are willing to do the work. Since tutors, in general, are experienced in their area, talking to them face-to-face always will give a better understanding of the subject.

2. Motivated students with a weak to a reasonable knowledge of the subject:

Advantages of Tutoring:  

• Tutors can help you to absorb the content at a much faster pace.
• Exposing yourself to a variety of different questions will add to your skill set and experience in that subject.

Disadvantages of Tutoring:

• If you only need to practice questions and have no serious problems with the content, then most likely tutoring is not necessary.

At your level, if you want a tutor, make sure to ask your tutor to give you as many questions as he/she can. The best way to get the most out of your tutoring is to ask your tutor to give you some insights towards the subject or at least some part of it as well as giving you as many practice/worksheet questions as possible.

3. Motivated students with an excellent understanding of the content:

Advantages of Tutoring:

• If you choose to go to high-level tutoring companies, then the techniques and knowledge that can be learnt from those companies might be very useful but not necessary, unless you are aiming for top state rank.

Disadvantages of Tutoring:

• Specialised tutoring classes can get very expensive and time-consuming.

In general, the rule of thumb when it comes to getting a tutor or not is: Do whatever conserves time and energy.
