Year 12 can be very stressful regardless of which course you’re applying for. There are many things to stay on top of throughout year 12 and it’s very easy to fall behind and become overwhelmed throughout the year, especially toward crunch time at the end of the year. Coping can be difficult and most students tend to struggle.

There are a variety of coping strategies available that you can try throughout the year, but if you’re really struggling remember it’s okay to talk to someone.

First and foremost, it’s important to stay on top of things. There are many ways to do this, however the most effective way I found during my studies was to simply write a list of tasks I had to get done for the day and cross them off as you go. Writing down tasks helps you visualise what you need to do and enables you to allocate certain times during the day to complete each task. It also feels very satisfying to cross that task off the list once you’ve finished it! This to-do-list also looks quite annoying when it’s long and so further encourages you to get the tasks done!

If the to-do-list isn’t working for you, there are still plenty of other options to help you stay on top of things! Some people preferred to make a weekly timetable with detailed specific times to study certain subjects. This may help you to stick to certain goals and complete tasks on a weekly basis and stay on top of your studies. It also helps you to keep track of how much you are studying of each subject, which can feel really good!

If timetables aren’t your thing, you can also possibly just mentally dedicate a certain day for each subject. You could study that subject to the core that day and move on to the next one the following day. This is quite difficult to do however as obviously each day you will get homework from other subjects which you may have to complete that night and of course, some people can get sick of studying the same subject for hours!

All in all, the key to year 12 is to stay on top of everything you have to do and keep track of when things are due or when assessments are coming up. There are a variety of methods to do this, some of which I have tried and mentioned in this blog. Find a way that works for you early on and stick with it throughout the year and I can guarantee you that coping in year 12 will be a piece of cake!
