Flinders University was founded in 1966 with an emphasis on research. They are ranked top 10-16 in Australia by the Academic Ranking of World Universities 2015, and top 200 of universities worldwide in medicine by the QS World University Rankings 2014-2015.

Flinders University was the first in Australia to offer a graduate entry medical course in 1996, rather than the traditional 5-6 year courses for school leavers. This allowed the university to rethink curriculum design and the way students were selected, which has now been nationally and internationally recognized and adopted by others schools in Australia. Since then, they have also reintroduced an undergraduate pathway for a small number of high performing students in a double degree of Bachelor of Clinical Sciences/Doctor of Medicine. There are now three entry pathways into the Doctor of Medicine at Flinders University:

Undergraduate Pathway via Bachelor of Clinical Sciences

This pathway is for applicants who have completed Year 12. They must sit the UMAT® Exam and their final ranking is determined by combining their UMAT® Exam and ATAR (or equivalent) scores. In the first two years of Clinical Sciences, all students must pass all topics and gain a GPA of 5.0 or above in order to be eligible to progress to the Doctor of Medicine.

Undergraduate Pathway via Bachelor of Clinical Sciences offered jointly in the Northern Territory by Flinders University and Charles Darwin University

This pathway is exactly the same as the Undergraduate Pathway via Bachelor of Clinical Sciences, however, the Doctor of Medicine component is to be completed in the Northern Territory.

Graduate Entry Pathway

Applicants must hold an approved degree or be due to complete a degree from an Australian university or tertiary institution deemed to be of equivalent standard. They must sit the GAMSAT® Exam, with selection for interview based largely on this performance. Final ranking is determined by combining scores for the test, performance in the first degree and personal qualities assessed in the interview. A minimum score in each section of the GAMSAT® Exam must be achieved in order to be considered in the admission process – 50 for Sections I and III and 46 for Section II, with a minimum score of 50 overall. For domestic applicants applying for South Australian places, the GAMSAT® Exam score required for an interview has ranged 61-67 in recent years (65 in 2013, 67 in 2014, 66 in 2015).
