How is your score in the UMAT® Exam calculated?

While ACER has not released any information about how UMAT® Exam scores are calculated, several rumors abound. Some preparation courses will tell you that the weighting of a question depends on the percentage of students who get it right. While this is a possibility, it is unknown whether this is true or not. What I do know is that the more questions you get correct, the higher your UMAT® Exam score will be. So practicing is the key.
 

When will I get my results?

Generally, results are released on September 20th. This will be via the ACER website, as ACER will not email out results. It is up to you to check your results on this date.
 

What will I get?

Your result will consist of three scores which are summed to generate your total score. The result from each section is calculated separately, but individual scores are usually irrelevant, as the total score is used by most Universities (see our blog entry on UMAT® Exam scores for further details). You will also receive a percentile score from 1-100, with 100 being the best. The percentile score tells you how you performed in comparison to the other students sitting UMAT® Exam, and is the most valuable score for entry into a medicine course, as the raw scores achieved in the UMAT® Exam change from year to year.
 

Will that get me into medicine?

The score required to get into any university medicine program depends on a number of factors. Many universities use other methods in addition to UMAT® Exam scores, such as ATAR or an interview, to screen medicine applicants. My advice is to check the requirement for entry into medicine for the specific universities you are interested in, and focus on achieving those requirements.
  

How long is it valid and can I re-sit?

Your UMAT® Exam score is valid for university applications in that year only, however a gap year is permitted. If you achieve the UMAT® Exam score required for entry you must apply for the degree in that year. If you do not achieve the score required for entry, you are able to re-sit the UMAT® Exam. However, this will only be beneficial if you have not enrolled in a university degree, as the vast majority of degrees requiring a UMAT® Exam score will only accept school leavers. Should you not achieve the UMAT® Exam score required, the other path into medicine involves the GAMSAT® Exam exam. This exam is taken while studying your undergraduate degree and is used to get into postgraduate medicine programs.
