The University of Queensland provides Australia’s largest medical degree program, integrating both graduate and school-leaver entry streams. Previously, the School of Medicine provided a MBBS Program, with 2015 being the first intake of the changed MD program. The School of Medicine is ranked 49th

in the world by the QS World University Rankings. The School has links to major teaching hospitals and research centres both within and external to the university. In 2012 it attracted $26.1 million in competitive research funding, and recorded 1700 research publications.

There are two possible entry pathways to studying medicine at the University of Queensland; direct (graduate) entry and provisional entry.

Direct (graduate) Entry

Applicants must have completed a minimum of a three-year bachelor degree awarded by an accredited Australian institution or overseas equivalent within a ten-year period preceding the proposed commencement date. Furthermore, they require a minimum GPA of 5.0 on the 7-point scale and a minimum score of 50 in each section of the GAMSAT® Exam taken in the last two years. Previous GAMSAT® Exam scores depend on the number of applicants and their scores, but have ranged from 66 in 2015 to 73 in 2012 for Commonwealth supported places.

Provisional Entry for School Leavers

Provisional entry for current school leavers provides a direct pathway to the MD conditional on: Queensland or interstate equivalent of Year 12 English, OP1 or entry rank 99 and competitive UMAT® Exam score. Successful applicants will then complete their first bachelor degree at the university and achieve a minimum GPA of 5.0 on the 7-point scale. Applicants are ranked by their UCAT aggregate score, with the required UMAT® Exam score depending on the number of applicants. Previously, UMAT® Exam aggregate scores have ranged from 179 in 2015 to 188 in 2013 for non-bonded positions. Furthermore, the Section 1 score is used as a tiebreaker for applicants who have the same UMAT® Exam score. In 2015, the tie-breaker was 69 and in 2013 it was 76.\
