The Casper test is the online situational judgement test that some Australian medical programs use when they assess how an applicant thinks through people, ethics, and professional choices. Acuity Insights, which delivers the test, describes it as an open-response situational judgement test: you are shown realistic situations and you explain what you would do and why, in typed answers and recorded video answers. Source: Acuity Insights, About Casper.
This page explains the Casper test in Australia: the Casper meaning, the structure, how long the sitting takes, how dates and registration work, what it costs, and how results are reported. The URL stays the same from year to year. Dates, fees, and the programs that require it change with each admissions cycle, so the working list is the current university guide and Acuity Insights.
Casper sits beside the academic requirements of a medical application. The exam for that pathway remains its own task. Graduate-entry applicants can start with how to become a doctor in Australia for the wider route, then use this page for the sitting itself.

What the Casper test means
The Casper test means a standardised online assessment of how you respond to interpersonal and professional situations. Acuity Insights designed it to sample social intelligence and professionalism. The qualities it names are collaboration, communication, empathy, ethics, fairness, motivation, problem solving, resilience, and self-awareness. Source: Acuity Insights, About Casper. In Australian admissions pages it is described as a Casper situational judgement test: ethics, empathy, and communication are the examples universities repeat. Source: University of Wollongong, domestic MD applicants.
Each program decides whether to use a Casper result, and how much weight to give it. Acuity Insights sends the score to the programs you select. It does not decide who receives an interview or an offer. Source: Acuity Insights, About Casper.
Two other assessments use similar language and cover different tasks. The UCAT ® situational judgement subtest is a section of UCAT ® ANZ, with its own questions, timing, and score. Casper is booked separately through an Acuity Insights account. A multiple mini interview is a later circuit of stations. Format, stations, and practice for that circuit are on the MMI interview guide. Schools that ask for Casper still use it as its own task.
Casper structure
Casper structure for the standard 2026–2027 admission cycle is two sections and 11 scenarios, taken in order. You complete 4 video-response scenarios, then 7 typed-response scenarios. Every scenario has two open-ended questions. Source: Acuity Insights, Casper format and length.
A scenario is either a short video, with a role such as friend or co-worker, or words on the screen. You may take an optional 30-second reflection, then answer in the method that section requires. You cannot switch methods, and speech-to-text needs a pre-approved accommodation. Source: Acuity Insights, Casper format and length. The sample situations are everyday dilemmas. Acuity Insights says there is no need to memorise content. Source: Acuity Insights, About Casper. Graduate-entry applicants who also need the GAMSAT ® are preparing for a different exam.
Australian teacher-education programs use a shorter test type: 2 video-response scenarios and 6 typed-response scenarios, about 45–65 minutes, with one optional break. Source: Acuity Insights, Casper format and length. Medicine applicants need the test type their program names. Test types are not interchangeable. Source: Acuity Insights, Casper step-by-step guide (2026).
Video responses
Each of the four video-response scenarios asks two questions, shown one at a time. You have 1 minute to record each answer. A 10-second countdown plays before recording starts, and the role prompt stays on screen during that countdown. Source: Acuity Insights, Casper format and length.
Typed responses
Each of the seven typed-response scenarios shows both questions on the same page. You have 3.5 minutes in total for both answers. Source: Acuity Insights, About Casper. Each question is scored separately, so the window has to cover both. Source: Acuity Insights, How Casper is scored.
How long the Casper test takes
The standard Casper test takes about 65–85 minutes, including two optional breaks. Source: Acuity Insights, About Casper. The 10-minute break comes after the video-response section. The 5-minute break comes after the first four typed-response scenarios. You can step away, and you need to be back when the clock ends. The shorter teacher-education test type leaves out that second break. Source: Acuity Insights, Casper format and length. Once the test has started, every section has to be completed for a score to be produced. Source: Acuity Insights, How Casper is scored.
The sitting is online, so the length is the same wherever you are. The exam your degree already requires is a separate choice, covered on UCAT ® and GAMSAT ® pathways. A school that asks for Casper adds this sitting to that pathway.
Casper test dates
Casper test dates are the sittings a program opens for one admissions cycle. Sign in, select the programs, and the account shows the dates those programs accept. The same list is on Acuity Insights' Dates and Fees search, filtered by country, cycle, time zone, program type, and school. Source: Acuity Insights, About Casper. The search shows the test type, the fees, the last usable date, and each distribution deadline, which is the last day a result can be sent to that program. Source: Acuity Insights, finding test type, dates, and deadlines.
Display the times in Australian Eastern time. A sitting listed in North American Eastern time can fall on a different clock time, and sometimes a different day, in Melbourne. Source: Acuity Insights, finding test type, dates, and deadlines. Follow the countdown in the account.
Published windows show how a cycle is laid out. They are not a standing national timetable. For 2027 entry, the University of Wollongong listed four Casper sittings for domestic general and rural Doctor of Medicine applicants: 12 April 2026 at 10 am AEST, 5 May 2026 at 7 pm AEST, 14 May 2026 at 7 pm AEST, and 11 June 2026 at 7 pm AEST. Wollongong named 11 June 2026 as the last result it would accept for that domestic cycle, including where the rest of the GEMSAS application had already been submitted. Source: University of Wollongong, domestic MD applicants. Curtin's 2027 domestic MBBS guide describes online sittings during August, September, and early October, taken in the same year as the application. Source: Curtin Medical School, 2027 domestic admissions guide. Notre Dame's current Doctor of Medicine page requires a Casper score and sends applicants to Casper for registration and dates, rather than printing a fresh date list on that page. Source: University of Notre Dame Australia, Doctor of Medicine.
Book the earliest date that still meets every program's distribution deadline. Scores reach programs about 2–3 weeks after the test, so a deadline can close before the last sitting you had in mind. Source: Acuity Insights, Casper step-by-step guide (2026). School-by-school application timing for graduate entry is kept on the medical school entry requirements page. Confirm the Casper dates on the university page for the intake you are actually entering.
Registering a Casper application
A Casper application is an Acuity Casper reservation. You keep a single Acuity Insights account, and an account from an earlier cycle is the one you continue to use. Source: Acuity Insights, Casper step-by-step guide (2026).
Before you pay, match the test type and the admissions cycle to the programs on your list. A result is valid for the cycle you select. Source: Acuity Insights, About Casper. Each program has to be on your distribution list before its distribution deadline. You can add another program after the test if it uses the same test type and the deadline is still open. Source: Acuity Insights, when results are sent. A booking for the wrong program, cycle, or test language is not refunded. Source: Acuity Insights, Casper cost.
Reserve at least 3 days before the sitting. Identity verification can take up to 3 business days, and the test will not start until the ID is approved. You upload clear colour photos of the front and back of a government-issued photo ID that shows your photo, full name, and date of birth, in English or French, plus a live selfie taken during verification. Source: Acuity Insights, Casper step-by-step guide (2026). The name, date of birth, and email on the account need to match the admissions application, because programs match on those details. Source: Acuity Insights, when results are sent. Wollongong also asks domestic applicants to enter a GAMSAT ® ID on the Casper registration. That ID is for identification. Wollongong says it is not the ID GEMSAS uses to choose which GAMSAT ® result to assess, and it does not have to be the same number as the one on the GEMSAS application. Source: University of Wollongong, domestic MD applicants.
Check which degrees you are actually applying to in the Australian medical schools directory before you lock the test type. A second test type, where a program category differs, means another sitting. Source: Acuity Insights, Casper step-by-step guide (2026).
Sit on a desktop or laptop, using Chrome or Firefox. Phones and tablets are not supported. You need a webcam, a microphone, and at least 1.5 Mbps download and 2 Mbps upload. Complete a system check on that same computer at least once within 6 hours of the start. Log in at least 30 minutes before the start, and begin within 15 minutes of the scheduled time. The camera and microphone stay on, with your face visible, except during the scheduled breaks. You sit alone. Copy and paste is disabled. Source: Acuity Insights, Casper step-by-step guide (2026).
You cannot retake the same Casper test type in the same application cycle to chase a better score. A retake is considered only in rare technical cases, and only if another date is still open. Source: Acuity Insights, Casper step-by-step guide (2026). Accommodation requests go in after the account exists, at least 4 weeks before the test date. Source: Acuity Insights, About Casper.
Casper test cost
The Casper test cost is a base testing fee plus a fee for each program that receives the result. Both amounts apply only to the current admissions cycle. Acuity Insights lists them on the Dates and Fees page after you select the programs, rather than as one national price. Source: Acuity Insights, Casper cost. Read that page for your own list before you pay.
Fees are final, non-refundable, and they do not move to the next cycle. That includes a booking made for the wrong program, the wrong test language, the wrong cycle, or a test you no longer need. Source: Acuity Insights, Casper cost.
Moving the date is free when you change it 31 or more days before the test. A $20 fee applies when you reschedule within 30 days, unless a waiver applies for a documented technical or medical issue. If the new date does not cover every program on your list, you remove the programs that date cannot serve. Changing a date that already has accommodations means contacting Acuity Insights at least one week ahead. Source: Acuity Insights, Casper step-by-step guide (2026).
Fee assistance that Acuity Insights names is for approved United States and United Kingdom schemes, including AAMC, AACOMAS, CASPA, ADEA, and a UCAS bursary. Source: Acuity Insights, About Casper. Australian applicants should check the current Dates and Fees page for any waiver that applies to them.
Casper is one line in a larger application budget. GAMSAT ® registration, GEMSAS, and school charges are separate. The graduate-entry requirements page is where those academic rules sit together, and it points Casper applicants back to Acuity Insights for the test fee.
How Casper results are reported
Casper results go to programs as one overall score, about 2–3 weeks after you finish. Typed and video answers are both included. If you add a program after that window, and it uses the same test type, the result is sent within one business day. Source: Acuity Insights, when results are sent.
You receive a quartile, by email and in the account, usually 4–5 weeks after the test. Until then the account can show an undefined percentile. Source: Acuity Insights, Casper step-by-step guide (2026). Programs receive more detailed scoring than that quartile. The program copy does not generate an email. The account shows “Completed – Results delivered” or “Completed – Results pending”. Source: Acuity Insights, when results are sent.
Quartiles split performance against other applicants on the same test type. A first-quartile result means other applicants had stronger responses on those scenarios. Acuity Insights is explicit that this is not a fail, and that most programs look at every quartile and use Casper as one piece of the file. Source: Acuity Insights, Casper quartile. Wollongong tells its own applicants to treat the quartile as a general guide and not as a reason to abandon an application. Its page estimates the quartile at about 3–4 weeks, which is a little sooner than Acuity Insights' usual 4–5 weeks, so the account is the record to trust. Source: University of Wollongong, domestic MD applicants.
Scoring is done by trained human raters, not by an automated mark. Responses are anonymised: the rater sees the typed or video answer, not your name, age, or photo. Both questions in a scenario are read by the same rater and scored separately. No rater scores you more than once. Ratings are averaged and then standardised against the applicant pool. Raters are told to judge reasoning, judgement, and communication. Spelling and grammar are not the point of the mark. Source: Acuity Insights, How Casper is scored.
Any cutoff a school sets is in that school's current guide. Acuity Insights does not publish a universal pass mark. The later interview is a separate assessment, and station design stays on the guide to MMIs.
Australian programs that require Casper
The Casper test in Australia is a requirement only where a program publishes one. The guides current for this draft name the University of Wollongong, the University of Notre Dame Australia, Curtin University, and the University of Queensland's Doctor of Dental Medicine. Select your programs in Acuity Insights before you book, because a school can join or leave the list between cycles. Source: Acuity Insights, About Casper. The Australian medical schools directory is the map of the medical schools. The notes below name who has published a requirement and leave the live cutoff in those guides.
University of Wollongong
Wollongong's domestic general and rural pathways to the Doctor of Medicine, for 2027 entry, require a valid Casper score. An applicant without one is not eligible, whatever the rest of the file looks like. For that intake, Casper is combined with UOW MD Admissions bonuses to rank applicants who have already met the GPA and GAMSAT ® hurdles. Wollongong publishes that interview ranking as 50% Casper and 50% bonuses. A minimum eligible Casper score is set each year from the cohort. Place offers use 70% interview and 30% bonuses. GPA, GAMSAT ®, and Casper are not in that place-offer formula. Source: University of Wollongong, domestic MD applicants.
International applicants have their own Wollongong page and their own sitting list. That page also requires a valid Casper score for the MD. Source: University of Wollongong, international MD applicants.
University of Notre Dame Australia
Notre Dame's Doctor of Medicine runs at Fremantle, Broome, and Sydney. General domestic applicants apply through GEMSAS. Selection uses a bachelor's degree, GAMSAT ®, GPA, a Casper score, and an online MMI. Notre Dame says interview places also consider Casper and bonus points, and that place offers take the interview score into account as well. Source: University of Notre Dame Australia, Doctor of Medicine.
The weighting for an intake is the GEMSAS guide, which Notre Dame tells applicants to read. Source: University of Notre Dame Australia, Pathways to Medicine.
One pathway publishes an explicit Casper floor. Notre Dame's biomedical science priority entry asks for a Casper score no lower than one standard deviation below the mean, alongside a GEMSAS GPA of at least 6.0 and an unweighted GAMSAT ® of at least 55, and it requires Notre Dame to be the first preference. That rule belongs to priority entry. It is not the rule for every Notre Dame applicant. Source: University of Notre Dame Australia, Pathways to Medicine.
Curtin University
Curtin's Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery requires Casper in the same year as the application. School leavers and Curtin course switchers sit the Undergraduate Casper test. Graduates who apply as non-school leavers sit the Postgraduate Casper test. Both are routes into the MBBS. Curtin ranks applicants on the Casper score together with ATAR (or equivalent academic merit) and UCAT ® ANZ. For interview selection, the 2027 domestic guide uses academic merit, Casper, and UCAT ® ANZ (out of 2700) in the ratio 35:35:30. A Casper score is valid only for the admissions year immediately after the test. A later application means sitting again. Curtin does not adjust Casper results. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants are not required to sit Casper or UCAT ® ANZ. Source: Curtin Medical School, 2027 domestic admissions guide. The aptitude test named in that guide is the UCAT ®.
University of Queensland Doctor of Dental Medicine
UQ's graduate-entry Doctor of Dental Medicine requires a Casper situational judgement test sat in the calendar year of admission. The result counts for that admission year only, and the test can be sat once in a calendar year. UQ ranks applicants on an unweighted average GAMSAT ® score (70 per cent) and the situational judgement test (30 per cent). It uses the situational judgement score again as a secondary differentiator when two applicants have the same final score. The course page names 20 October as the last sitting it will accept, and it publishes the dates for the intake, so use that page rather than a copied calendar. Applicants who meet the minimum entry requirements and identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander are offered a place. The other entry rules for this dental degree, including prerequisites and the GAMSAT ® hurdle, stay with the pathway into dentistry. Source: University of Queensland, Doctor of Dental Medicine.
Preparing for the sitting
Casper prep, for this sitting, is a timed rehearsal of the format. After you reserve, the free practice test in your Acuity Insights account matches the test type you booked. It includes typed and video responses. You can take it as many times as you like. The answers are not saved, scored, or returned, and the practice test is not a preview of the exact scenarios or difficulty you will get. If extra time has been approved, the approval letter includes a separate practice link with that timing. Source: Acuity Insights, Casper prep.
Acuity Insights' advice on what to practise is short. Say what you would do and why. Use the time you are given. On typed scenarios, leave enough of the 3.5 minutes for both questions, because they are marked separately. Bullets are acceptable. Raters are trained to follow the idea, including when a sentence is unfinished. Spelling, grammar, and jargon are not what they score. If typing is slow, use an ordinary typing tool beforehand. If speaking to a camera is uncomfortable, record yourself and watch it back. Source: Acuity Insights, Casper prep.
Acuity Insights is not affiliated with third-party Casper courses and does not endorse them. It reports that test takers who use third-party preparation materials, or who do not prepare, tend to do worse than test takers who use the free Casper resources. Source: Acuity Insights, About Casper.
Applicants who also need the graduate exam continue that work on its own terms. GAMSAT ® preparation is the study for that exam. It does not rehearse a Casper scenario.
Casper test questions
What does the Casper test mean?
The Casper test is an online situational judgement test run by Acuity Insights. You respond to realistic situations in typed and video answers so programs can see how you reason about collaboration, communication, empathy, ethics, fairness, motivation, problem solving, resilience, and self-awareness. Some Australian medical programs require it. The program decides how to use the score.
How long is the Casper test?
The standard test takes about 65–85 minutes, including two optional breaks. You record four video-response scenarios, with 1 minute for each of two questions, then type through seven scenarios, with 3.5 minutes for both questions on each one. A 10-minute break follows the video section. A 5-minute break follows the first four typed scenarios. Australian teacher-education programs use a shorter test type, so medicine applicants need the type their program names.
How much does the Casper test cost?
Acuity Insights charges a base testing fee plus a fee for each program that receives the result. The amounts are listed on its Dates and Fees page for the programs and cycle you select, and they apply only to that cycle. Fees are not refundable and do not carry forward. Rescheduling is free 31 or more days before the test. A $20 fee applies within 30 days, unless a documented technical or medical waiver applies.
When should I book a Casper test date?
Book the earliest sitting your programs accept, at least 3 days ahead, and early enough that scores can arrive about 2–3 weeks later and still meet each distribution deadline. Dates are set by program and cycle. Wollongong, Notre Dame, and Curtin each publish their own windows, and the next intake will publish a new list. Use an Acuity Insights account or the Dates and Fees search, with times shown in Australian Eastern time.
How are Casper results reported?
Programs receive one overall score about 2–3 weeks after the test. You receive a quartile, usually by email 4–5 weeks later. The quartile compares you with other people who sat the same test type. A first-quartile result means other applicants had stronger responses. Acuity Insights says that is not a fail. Human raters score each question, and programs receive more detail than the quartile you see.
Which Australian medical programs require Casper?
Current admissions guides require it for the University of Wollongong Doctor of Medicine, the University of Notre Dame Australia Doctor of Medicine through GEMSAS (Fremantle, Broome, and Sydney), and Curtin University's MBBS. Curtin school leavers and course switchers sit the undergraduate test type. Curtin graduates sit the postgraduate test type. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants to Curtin are not required to sit it. UQ's Doctor of Dental Medicine, which is a dental degree rather than a medical degree, also requires Casper in the year of application. Confirm the list in Acuity Insights before you book, because programs change.
Can I retake the Casper test?
You cannot retake the same Casper test type in the same application cycle to improve the score. A later cycle means a new sitting if the program requires a result for that cycle. Curtin, for example, accepts a Casper score only for the admissions year immediately after the test. A retake inside a cycle is limited to rare technical problems, and only when another date is still open.
Is the Casper test the UCAT ® situational judgement subtest?
The Casper test is a separate online assessment booked with Acuity Insights, using typed and video answers across about 65–85 minutes. The UCAT ® situational judgement subtest is a section of UCAT ® ANZ with its own timing and score. Curtin's MBBS asks for both UCAT ® ANZ and Casper. A school that uses only UCAT ® ANZ has not asked you to sit Casper unless its own guide says so.
