Medicine Monash: direct entry and graduate entry

20 min read | Read 9 times

Medicine Monash is the Bachelor of Medical Science and Doctor of Medicine, and it is offered through two Australian routes that lead to the same award. Direct entry is the five-year school-leaver course. Graduate entry is the four-year course for people who already hold an approved Monash degree. This page explains both routes, the entry rules, how the UCAT ® cut-off and interview dates work, and what the Monash MMI involves. The current year's dates, fees, and cut-offs stay on the university's own pages, because those figures move.

The Doctor of Medicine at Monash

The Doctor of Medicine at Monash is the combined Bachelor of Medical Science and Doctor of Medicine. Monash describes itself as the only Victorian university that offers both a Year 12 direct-entry medical program and a graduate-entry program into that same degree. Source: Monash direct-entry course page. Other Australian medical schools are listed in the Australian medical schools guide. Readers comparing rank or prestige can use MD ranking.

Direct entry, course code M6011, is five years full time. It starts at Clayton in first semester (February). The first two years are campus-based, using lectures, integrated case learning, simulation, and clinical contact visits. The final three years are hospital and community placements, and the final year follows a trainee-internship pattern. Sources: Monash direct-entry course page and the Monash handbook for M6011 and M6019.

Graduate entry, course code M6018, is a four-year pathway into the same degree. Source: Monash direct-entry course page. Its early systems teaching is Year A, and students then join the clinical rotations. Source: Monash handbook for M6011 and M6019. Monash runs that selection for the Churchill (Gippsland) program. Source: Monash graduate-entry applications. Placements use metropolitan Melbourne and rural Victoria, including Monash Medical Centre and The Alfred. Source: Monash direct-entry course page. The handbook also describes a Malaysia stream, in Kuala Lumpur, Johor Bahru, or Segamat. This page follows the Australian routes.

The course is accredited by the Australian Medical Council. Graduates are eligible for provisional registration with Ahpra and the Medical Board of Australia, then general registration after a compulsory internship in an approved hospital. Commonwealth-supported students complete at least four weeks in a rural area, and a smaller cohort can spend much longer there. Those longer cohorts are the Extended Rural Cohort and the end-to-end rural cohorts, described below. The handbook also allows an exit with a Bachelor of Medical Science after three years and 144 credit points of this medicine course, and a one-year intermission for Bachelor of Medical Science (Honours) before returning. That exit belongs to the medicine course. Source: Monash handbook for M6011 and M6019.

Medicine Monash entry requirements

Medicine Monash entry requirements are two different gates. Direct entry is for applicants who finished Year 12 no more than two years before the course starts and who have not started tertiary study, including a Certificate IV. Graduate entry is for applicants with a listed Monash degree, or the Federation University Gippsland biomedical degree where the extra rural rule is met. Someone who has already started university uses the graduate route. Source: Monash direct-entry requirements.

The floors are eligibility, not the score that usually receives an offer. Monash says the final ATAR is significantly higher in most intakes, and it publishes the lowest ATAR to which an offer was made on the course page. Read that figure there. It is the lowest unadjusted ATAR among offered applicants, after selection on all three components. Source: Monash direct-entry course page.

Both routes share three further rules.

The Dean's Rural List is a separate application, renewed every intake, for people whose principal home was in an MM2–MM7 area for five consecutive years or ten years in total. At least 27% of domestic medicine places are reserved for applicants on that list. Boarding-school students can use the family home. Holiday houses do not count. Source: Monash Dean's Rural List. A bonded Commonwealth place follows its own return-of-service rules. How to become a doctor in Australia sets out Commonwealth supported places and bonded places. The school list, and the national fee picture, stay on Australian medical schools.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants can use the Indigenous Entry Scheme. It replaces competitive ranking. The interview is a panel of Indigenous academics, student engagement staff, and a community member. On the direct route, that panel replaces both the MMI and UCAT ® ANZ. Source: Monash direct-entry requirements. On the graduate route, the panel replaces the MMI. Source: Monash graduate-entry requirements.

Applicants must be 17 when the course starts. A younger applicant is usually asked to defer. The degree has inherent requirements. A reasonable adjustment changes how a student meets those requirements. It does not change the requirements themselves. Source: Monash direct-entry requirements. Police checks, a Working with Children check, and immunisation are needed before clinical placement. They are not required before an offer. Source: Monash direct-entry course page.

Domestic students in both routes are admitted to Commonwealth supported places. The student contribution is set each year on the Monash course and fees pages. Use those pages for the amount. Sources: Monash direct-entry applications and Monash graduate-entry applications.

Monash direct entry medicine

Monash direct entry medicine is the school-leaver route into the five-year degree. You can apply if you finished Year 12, or a VCE equivalent, no more than two years before commencement, and you have not started other tertiary study in that time. A Certificate IV or higher makes you ineligible for this course. Source: Monash direct-entry requirements. Which other undergraduate medical schools use UCAT ® ANZ is covered on UCAT ® medicine.

VCE prerequisites are a study score of at least 30 in English other than EAL, or at least 35 in English (EAL), and at least 30 in Chemistry, both in Units 3 and 4. The IB equivalents are a pass at the published English level and at least 5 in Chemistry SL or 4 in Chemistry HL, with a minimum of 39 overall. Where a Year 12 certificate does not make a specific English subject compulsory, English-rich units do not replace English. Biology is not required. Students who have not done Year 12 Biology are advised to take Monash's free online biology bridging program, which starts in mid-January and is described as 20–30 hours a week for five to seven weeks. Source: Monash direct-entry requirements.

Every domestic applicant sits UCAT ® ANZ. Final ranking then weights the ATAR aggregate, including equity adjustments, the UCAT ® total, and the MMI equally. Source: Monash direct-entry applications.

Applications are through VTAC, and only during timely applications. The current closing time is on the Monash applications page. You need at least one Monash medicine code on your preferences at that close. You cannot add one later, and if you remove every Monash medicine preference you cannot put one back. The published codes are school-leaver entry (2800311231), Extended Rural Cohort (2800311261), and Bonded Medical Program (2800311251). Offers go out in the January and February VTAC rounds. There is no December VTAC offer round for this course. The February round backfills places given up by people who accepted in January. Sources: Monash direct-entry applications and the Monash direct-entry course page.

International applicants sit the ISAT instead of UCAT ® ANZ. The published minimum is 170 overall, with at least 165 in both Critical Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning. Their MMI is four stations, and the same personal qualities are assessed. Qualification equivalents, including English language tests, are on the international requirements page. This year's ISAT windows should be read there. Source: Monash international direct-entry requirements.

Extended Rural Cohort

The Extended Rural Cohort is a direct-entry place type with its own VTAC code. It has 30 Commonwealth supported places. The first two years are at Clayton with the other medical students. The next two clinical years are in rural and regional Victoria, in the north-west or in Gippsland. In the final year, which is six rotations of six weeks across two 18-week semesters, students can spend a semester or the full year at a regional site. Domestic applicants, including New Zealand citizens and Australian permanent residents, can apply. You must nominate the Extended Rural Cohort code to be considered for it. Source: Monash Extended Rural Cohort.

Graduate entry medicine at Monash

Graduate entry medicine at Monash is a direct application to the university. Applicants are not required to sit the GAMSAT ®. The shared GPA, GAMSAT ®, and preference system used by most other Australian graduate-entry schools is explained in graduate entry medicine requirements. At Monash, selection is the undergraduate weighted average mark at 40% and the MMI at 60%. Sources: Monash graduate-entry requirements and Monash graduate-entry applications.

There are about 72 domestic places. Seventy per cent are allocated to students who completed the Bachelor of Biomedical Science at Monash. The other 30% are open to every qualifying domestic applicant, and biomedical science graduates are ranked in that pool as well. Source: Monash graduate-entry FAQs.

You apply in the final year of the qualifying degree, or after you have finished it, through my.application. Monash's FAQ states that domestic applications open on 1 May and close on 31 July, and that late applications are not considered. Interview days and offer days for the intake you want are on the applications page, and those days change. You can be considered twice. The two attempts do not have to be consecutive years. Sources: Monash graduate-entry FAQs, Monash graduate-entry applications, and Monash graduate-entry requirements.

The WAM is taken from the qualifying undergraduate degree. Further honours or master's results are left out, and there is no ten-year recency rule. Monash does not accept a transfer into the program, and it does not grant credit toward the medicine degree. Two qualifying degrees are handled like this: interview selection uses the higher WAM; an offer uses the Bachelor of Biomedical Science WAM for the 70% allocation and the highest qualifying WAM for the 30%. A double degree is assessed on the overall course WAM. Source: Monash graduate-entry FAQs.

International graduate applicants need a degree with significant and broad biomedical science content from a recognised university, with a GPA of at least 6.0 out of 7.0. Shortlisted applicants are interviewed. Source: Monash graduate-entry course page.

Qualifying degrees and the WAM

The domestic qualifying degrees, each with a WAM of at least 70, are:

  • Bachelor of Biomedical Science at Monash, including double degrees
  • Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours) at Monash
  • Bachelor of Physiotherapy (Honours) at Monash
  • Bachelor of Science at Monash, including double degrees, with the specified units
  • Bachelor of Biomedical Science (Gippsland Partnership Program) at Federation University

Source: Monash graduate-entry requirements.

A Bachelor of Science needs at least five units from Monash's published second-year biomedical list. Faculty credit for an equivalent unit counts. Four units plus a major in a listed area can be assessed case by case. Extra single subjects can complete the five, but they are not added to the degree WAM. Applicants also need at least 96 credit points at Monash in the qualifying degree, and a transfer into that degree cannot bring more than 48 credit points from the previous course. Students in a combined pharmacy award can apply once the four-year Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours) component is complete, then take an alternative exit from the longer award. Source: Monash graduate-entry FAQs.

The Federation Gippsland degree has its own rural rule: at least five consecutive years, or ten years in total, in a Gippsland region classified MM2–MM7, as well as a WAM of at least 70. Source: Monash graduate-entry FAQs.

A final-year applicant must reach the minimum WAM after Semester 1 results. For applicants who are not on the Dean's Rural List, the WAM that actually receives an interview is higher than 70, and Monash publishes that threshold by intake year. Rural-list applicants are ranked separately, with a lower interview threshold. Source: Monash graduate-entry requirements. Read the current threshold on that page. Your course, and whether you prefer a standard place, a bonded place, or an end-to-end place, does not change interview selection. Source: Monash graduate-entry applications.

End-to-end rural cohorts

The end-to-end rural cohorts are graduate-entry places inside the same degree. Monash Rural Health describes about 72 domestic graduate places, of which 35 are set aside for these cohorts: 30 in the north-west and five in Gippsland, with the Gippsland intake commencing in 2027. North-west placements include Bendigo, Mildura, Swan Hill, and other Loddon Mallee towns. Gippsland placements are across that region. Source: Monash end-to-end rural cohorts.

Year A, the foundations year, is at Churchill, with Gippsland community and hospital placements. Clinical years are then spent in a mix of regional, rural, and metropolitan settings. Direct-entry and graduate-entry students come together for those three clinical years. Source: Monash Rural Health, medicine students. After applications close, every domestic graduate applicant completes a preference form for standard entry, the Bonded Medical Program, and the end-to-end cohorts. That step is compulsory. Source: Monash graduate-entry applications.

The Monash medicine UCAT ® cut-off

The Monash medicine UCAT ® cut-off applies to direct entry only. Graduate entry does not use UCAT ® ANZ. Domestic direct-entry applicants sit UCAT ® ANZ in the year before the intake. Booking dates are on UCAT ® 2026, and preparation is on how to prepare for the UCAT ®.

December invitations, for the Dean's Rural List and for Victorian applicants outside that list, use the UCAT ® total alone, because ATARs are not all in. January invitations use the ATAR aggregate and the UCAT ® total equally. Everyone who is interviewed is then ranked with ATAR, UCAT ®, and the MMI weighted equally. Sources: Monash direct-entry requirements and Monash direct-entry applications.

Monash publishes the lowest UCAT ® total that received a December interview, separately for rural-list applicants and for Victorian applicants, together with how many interview offers were made. Those cut-offs change with the number of interview places and the spread of scores. Source: Monash direct-entry requirements. Use the row for the intake you are applying to. UCAT ® scores explains the current total, including why a total from an earlier sitting is not a target.

Situational judgement does not enter the total Monash ranks. It separates applicants whose totals are equal. Source: Monash direct-entry requirements.

Monash medicine interview dates

Monash medicine interview dates are set by the faculty, and an interview is only offered inside those sittings. If you do not attend, you leave the ranked list. You book a time in Monash's online system. Once that system closes, the time cannot be changed. Source: Monash direct-entry requirements. The days below describe the pattern. The applications pages carry the dates for the current intake, and Monash marks them as subject to change.

Direct-entry rounds

Direct-entry interviews are online and run in four waves. Source: Monash direct-entry applications.

  • A December sitting for the Dean's Rural List, from any location, selected on the UCAT ® total only.
  • A December sitting for Victorian applicants who are not on that list, also selected on the UCAT ® total only. Victorian location is the address on the VTAC application when timely applications close.
  • A January sitting for Victorian applicants and for rural-list applicants, selected on an equal combination of the ATAR aggregate and the UCAT ® total.
  • A later January sitting for applicants who completed Year 12 interstate or overseas, on the same equal combination.

A direct-entry applicant attends the MMI once. Anyone who attends, and who still has a Monash medicine preference in VTAC, stays in the ranked list. Course offers follow in the January VTAC rounds, with a smaller February round for places that are later given up. Sources: Monash direct-entry requirements and Monash direct-entry applications.

Beside each December cut-off, Monash publishes how many interview offers it made for that round and that intake. That offer count is the interviewed pool. Monash does not publish how many people lodged a VTAC application. If you are looking up an applicant total, use the interview-offer count on the entry requirements page. Source: Monash direct-entry requirements.

Graduate interviews and course offers

Graduate interviews are also on Zoom. For the current cycle, the applications page states how many interview places are available and the days they run. Invitation is by WAM. A second graduate application reuses the first MMI score. Monash does not offer another sitting, and it does not give interview feedback. Sources: Monash graduate-entry applications and Monash graduate-entry FAQs. An earlier direct-entry MMI does not use up the graduate-entry interview. You can be interviewed for graduate entry even if you were interviewed for direct entry. Source: Monash graduate-entry requirements.

Graduate course offers are released by Monash from December, with later rounds only where an earlier offer lapses. That calendar is separate from the VTAC January offers used for direct entry. Source: Monash graduate-entry applications. The published graduate figure to use, when you want a sense of scale, is the interview-place count on that applications page, alongside the standing size of the course, about 72 domestic places. Source: Monash graduate-entry FAQs. Those are not an applicant headcount.

Interviews at the graduate schools that share one application are a different arrangement. That system is on graduate entry medicine requirements.

The Monash MMI

The Monash MMI, for domestic direct entry and for graduate entry, is six stations. Each station gives two minutes to read a scenario and eight minutes with the interviewer, so ten minutes at the station. The circuit takes about 70 to 80 minutes, including the briefing. Source: Monash direct-entry requirements. International direct-entry applicants have four stations. Source: Monash international direct-entry requirements.

The stations look at advocacy, collaboration, critical thinking, empathy, ethical reasoning, motivation, and resilience. Source: Monash direct-entry requirements. Monash says it does not endorse external coaching, that it expects no clinical knowledge, and that there are no right or wrong answers. Each station is scored by a different interviewer, the interviewers do not confer, and feedback is not available. Source: Monash graduate-entry FAQs. How a multiple mini interview is structured in general, including station types and a way to practise, is in the MMI interview guide.

Medicine Monash questions

Can I apply for Monash direct entry if I have already started university?

No. Direct entry is only for applicants who finished Year 12 no more than two years before the course starts and who have not commenced tertiary study, including a Certificate IV. Once you have started that study, you look at graduate entry, which requires an approved Monash degree or the Federation University Gippsland biomedical degree.

Does graduate entry medicine at Monash require the GAMSAT ®?

No. Graduate entry is a direct application to Monash. Selection is the undergraduate WAM, weighted 40%, and the MMI, weighted 60%. The qualifying degree must be a listed Monash course, or the Federation Gippsland biomedical degree if you also meet that pathway's rural rule, with a WAM of at least 70.

What UCAT ® score do I need for a Monash interview?

UCAT ® ANZ is a direct-entry requirement. December interviews are offered on the UCAT ® total alone, with separate thresholds for the Dean's Rural List and for Victorian applicants. January interviews use the ATAR and the UCAT ® total together. Monash publishes the lowest December total for each recent intake on its entry requirements page. Use the row for your intake. Older rows use a different score scale.

When are Monash medicine interviews?

Direct-entry interviews run in December for rural-list applicants and for Victorian applicants, then in January for remaining Victorian, rural-list, interstate, and overseas Year 12 applicants. Graduate interviews are a separate Zoom sitting, with the days published on the graduate applications page. Monash does not interview outside the published sittings, and the exact days change.

How many people get a Monash medicine interview?

Monash publishes interview-offer counts for the direct-entry December rounds, and it states how many graduate interview places are available for the current cycle. It does not publish a total applicant headcount. The domestic graduate course is about 72 places, which is the size of the intake, not the size of the applicant pool.

Which degrees qualify for Monash graduate entry medicine?

The domestic list is Monash's Bachelor of Biomedical Science, Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours), Bachelor of Physiotherapy (Honours), and Bachelor of Science with at least five specified biomedical units, plus Federation University's Bachelor of Biomedical Science (Gippsland Partnership Program) for applicants who meet the Gippsland rural rule. The WAM floor is 70. About 70% of domestic places are reserved for Monash biomedical science graduates.

When does the Monash medicine year start?

Direct entry starts in first semester, in February, at Clayton. The first two years follow the handbook semester map. Clinical years are rotation blocks, and the current year's placement dates are in the handbook. Students without Year 12 Biology are pointed to a bridging program from mid-January. Graduate entry begins with Year A at Churchill.

Can I sit the Monash MMI more than once?

You can sit the direct-entry MMI once, and the graduate-entry MMI once. A second application to the same course reuses the first score. An interview for direct entry does not stop you being interviewed later for graduate entry. The Indigenous Entry Scheme uses a panel interview instead of the MMI.
