UTAS medicine is the University of Tasmania's medical program: the Bachelor of Medical Science and Doctor of Medicine (BMedScMD). School leavers and graduates enter that same five-year degree. This page explains the program and the University of Tasmania medicine entry requirements. The university course page publishes this year's dates, fees, and score thresholds.

The national list of schools stays on Australian medical schools. That directory keeps a one-line note that Tasmania is a five-year BMedScMD with a graduate stream. The explanation of how that degree works lives here. A national ranking of medical schools lives on MD ranking.

UTAS medicine is a five-year combined degree

The University of Tasmania awards one combined degree, course code H3X. Students complete 500 credit points: 300 in the Bachelor of Medical Science and 200 in the Doctor of Medicine. The university issues one testamur for the combined award. Someone who leaves after the first three years can take the Bachelor of Medical Science as an exit award (M3O). The course handbook lists the BMedScMD at Australian Qualifications Framework level 7. Source: University of Tasmania, BMedScMD course page.

The course is full-time. The handbook sets a minimum of five years and a maximum of seven. Source: University of Tasmania, BMedScMD course page.

School leavers and applicants who already hold a degree join the same BMedScMD. The graduate route is a stream into that five-year degree. It is a different arrangement from the four-year Doctor of Medicine courses that take domestic applications through GEMSAS. GEMSAS publishes its participating schools, and the University of Tasmania is not on that list. How those GEMSAS schools weight GPA and GAMSAT ® is covered on graduate-entry medicine requirements. Source: GEMSAS, participating medical schools.

The Australian Medical Council accredits the BMedScMD as the University of Tasmania's primary medical program, with accreditation listed to 31 March 2028 and a reaccreditation event in 2027. The same AMC row lists the older Bachelor of Medicine / Bachelor of Surgery as a teach-out program. The current award to apply for is the BMedScMD. Graduates can apply for provisional registration and an internship in an approved hospital. After that internship, they can apply for general registration as a medical practitioner in Australia and New Zealand. Source: University of Tasmania, medicine courses.

Campuses, clinical years, and placements

From 2026 the Medicine Program is offered at Hobart, Launceston, and Cradle Coast. Applicants put those campuses in preference order. Offers are made separately for each campus, according to the places available there. Source: University of Tasmania, BMedScMD course page.

The first two years are taught on campus. Students also meet patients in healthcare settings, with an emphasis on community and rural learning. From third year, students are based at a clinical school in Hobart, Launceston, or the Rural Clinical School in Burnie. The medicine overview describes short placements and community visits in years 1 and 2, then general medicine and primary care in year 3, surgery, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology, and psychiatry in year 4, and general practice, emergency, acute care, medicine, surgery, and aged care in year 5. Students also complete electives and a Professional Practice Project. Sources: University of Tasmania, BMedScMD course page and University of Tasmania, medicine courses.

Teaching is organised into four domains: Clinical Practice, Professionalism and Leadership, Health and Society, and Science and Scholarship. Case-based learning is used to join the science with the clinical work. Since 2025, students in the Tasmanian Rural Training Stream can complete the whole degree on the north-west coast. Source: University of Tasmania, medicine courses.

Before the first placement, every student has to meet the Safety in Practice requirements. Those include a National Police Record Check, Working with Vulnerable People registration, and a first aid certificate. They are completed separately from the admission application. The clinical years are arranged so a graduate can start supervised practice in an Australian or New Zealand hospital. Where that sits in the full path, from the degree to internship and general registration, is covered in how to become a doctor in Australia.

University of Tasmania medicine entry requirements

Domestic applicants fall into two groups, and the admissions test follows the group. School leavers are ranked on ATAR, with UCAT ® ANZ used when ATAR scores are tied. Applicants with a completed degree are considered on GPA and GAMSAT ®. UCAT ® and the GAMSAT ® compares the two exams. The published minima for the intake you want — adjusted ATAR, unweighted GPA, and GAMSAT ® section scores — are on the course page, and they can change. Meeting a published minimum does not guarantee a place. Source: University of Tasmania, BMedScMD course page.

Applicants must be at least 17 years of age on 1 February in the year the course starts. The BMedScMD is outside the Schools Recommendation Program. The course does not admit students on the basis of VET or TAFE study, or on work or life experience alone. An applicant who has completed a medicine degree overseas, or who has been excluded from a medical degree at another institution, is not eligible. Source: University of Tasmania, BMedScMD course page.

For a standard place, the university does not interview. The Aboriginal Entry Pathway, described below, does include an interview. Applicants who are also applying to schools that use a multiple mini interview can prepare with the MMI interview format. Source: University of Tasmania, BMedScMD course page.

School leavers and UCAT ® ANZ

A school-leaver application is for someone who has recently finished secondary school and has not commenced tertiary study. That means no recorded results in an AQF Level 5 Higher Education Diploma or above. A result counts if it was issued after the census date, unless a withdrawal without academic penalty was granted. Source: University of Tasmania, BMedScMD course page.

ATAR, or an ATAR equivalent from within five years of the course start, is the primary rank. A valid UCAT ® ANZ score is also required. Where applicants share an ATAR, the university separates them with UCAT ® ANZ. It uses the combined score of the three cognitive subtests and leaves out situational judgement. A UCAT ® ANZ result can be used only in the admission cycle of the year after the test. ISAT and MCAT are not accepted for domestic applicants. How universities use UCAT ® ANZ for medicine, and how to read the cognitive total, is covered on UCAT ® ANZ for medicine and UCAT ® scores. Source: University of Tasmania, BMedScMD course page.

Two subject prerequisites apply, each within the last five years. Chemistry is Tasmanian Senior Secondary Chemistry (CHM415115) or an equivalent. An applicant who has not met that prerequisite completes a University of Tasmania foundation chemistry unit before admission. English is Year 12 English, English Literature, English Writing, English Inquiry Level 3, or English Studio Level 3, or an equivalent the course coordinator accepts. Year 12 English as an Additional Language or Dialect is not an accepted English prerequisite. Source: University of Tasmania, BMedScMD course page.

Graduate entry into the same degree

The higher-education route is still an application for the five-year BMedScMD. It is considered on GPA, calculated on all tertiary study at bachelor level and above, and on GAMSAT ®. The qualifying study is a completed bachelor degree (AQF Level 7) or higher, from an Australian higher education provider or an equivalent overseas qualification, awarded no more than 10 years before the course starts. The other qualifying route is an Australian or equivalent overseas qualification held with current general registration for the last five years with Ahpra, the National Alliance of Self-Regulating Professions, or an Australian veterinarian registration authority. Source: University of Tasmania, BMedScMD course page.

GPA is unweighted. The first complete bachelor degree is calculated when that degree is finished. Further tertiary study at bachelor level or above is then averaged in. A completed masters by research, and a completed PhD, each add a published adjustment to the overall GPA. The course page is where those points, and the minimum unweighted GPA, are printed for the current intake. GAMSAT ® must be met in each of the three sections, at the minimum the university publishes, and the sittings UTAS accepts are the same sittings GEMSAS uses. What a GAMSAT ® result means is explained with GAMSAT ® scores. Source: University of Tasmania, BMedScMD course page.

Two University of Tasmania degrees have their own places in this route. An applicant who completes the Bachelor of Medical Research (BMedRes) at Tasmania in the year before medicine can be considered on the cumulative average from that degree, without a GAMSAT ® result. Rural and Tasmanian quotas do not apply to that pathway. The handbook tells anyone completing the BMedRes in 2026 or later to contact the Tasmanian School of Medicine before relying on it. Source: University of Tasmania, BMedScMD course page.

From entry in 2027 there is a separate quota for the Bachelor of Biomedicine (M3X) completed at Tasmania in the year before medicine. That quota includes a student in a vertical double degree who has finished the academic requirements for the M3X exit award and then requests that award. A student who finishes the full vertical double degree is outside the quota and applies through the general graduate stream. Biomedicine-quota applications use GPA and GAMSAT ®. Rural and Tasmanian quotas do not apply. The international rules describe the older medical-research route as moving into this biomedicine quota, with GAMSAT ® then required. Read the current course page before you choose which UTAS degree to finish. Source: University of Tasmania, BMedScMD course page.

Rural, Tasmanian, and Aboriginal places

Domestic places are divided before the rank order is applied. The BMedScMD has a quota of 50% domestic rural students, using Modified Monash Model areas MM2–MM7, and that quota includes 25% from MM3–MM7. At least 75% of domestic places go to Tasmanian applicants. For a school leaver, Tasmanian means a Tasmanian Certificate of Education or an International Baccalaureate completed at a Tasmanian high school or secondary college within five years of the course start. For an applicant with previous tertiary study, it means current residence in Tasmania plus five or more consecutive years lived there, or ten or more cumulative years in Tasmania with residence there not more than ten years before the course starts. Source: University of Tasmania, BMedScMD course page.

The Rural Application Process is how rural residency is recorded. It is part of the ordinary online application. There is no separate rural form. Eligibility is five or more consecutive years, or ten cumulative years, in an MM2–MM7 area before the medicine course starts. All of Tasmania is MM2–MM7. Year 12 applicants who qualify can receive an ATAR adjustment; tertiary applicants use the same process for quota eligibility and do not receive that ATAR adjustment. The rural page publishes the current adjustment. Check an address in the Modified Monash Model locator. Source: University of Tasmania, medicine rural application process.

Twenty domestic places are held for the Tasmanian Rural Training Stream at the Cradle Coast campus. The academic criteria are the same as the matching pathway: ATAR and UCAT ® ANZ for school leavers, GPA and GAMSAT ® for graduate entry. Offers are prioritised in four tiers. Tier 1 is the stream's Tasmanian footprint: Tasmanian MM3–MM7 locations, plus Tasmanian postcodes beginning with 73 and 72. Tier 2 is other Tasmanian MM2 areas. Tier 3 is interstate MM3–MM7. Tier 4 is interstate MM1–MM2. Accepting a place means a written commitment to complete every year of the BMedScMD at Cradle Coast in Burnie and its associated training sites. Source: University of Tasmania, BMedScMD course page.

The Aboriginal Entry Pathway is an additional route for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants. A clinical aptitude test is not required: school leavers do not need UCAT ® ANZ, and non-school leavers do not need UCAT ® ANZ or GAMSAT ®. The applicant still completes the ordinary university application, plus the Aboriginal Entry Pathway form, a confirmation of eligibility, and a personal statement. Prerequisites are Year 12 English and chemistry, or an equivalent, within five years. Chemistry can be met by passing Introduction to Chemistry (KRA161) before medicine starts. School leavers also need a competitive ATAR. Non-school leavers provide qualifications and experience in a health-related field, and a referee report. Both groups interview with representatives of the Medicine Admissions Committee. Source: University of Tasmania, Aboriginal entry pathway.

The university is required to enrol about 30% of domestic BMedScMD students in the Bonded Medical Program. Bonded offers go to school leavers and to applicants with previous higher education. A bonded place is a Commonwealth supported place with a return-of-service commitment. It is not a scholarship. The Commonwealth describes the program, and the national difference between a rural-origin place and a bonded place is on Australian medical schools. Sources: University of Tasmania, BMedScMD course page and Bonded Medical Program, Department of Health, Disability and Ageing.

Applying directly to the University of Tasmania

Domestic applications are lodged with the University of Tasmania, not through GEMSAS. Closing dates are applied strictly, and a late application is not accepted. The course page for the year of entry carries the opening and closing dates. International applicants have their own sequence of offer rounds, also published there. An international file that misses one round can be held for a later round until places are filled. Source: University of Tasmania, BMedScMD course page.

International school leavers are considered on ATAR or an equivalent rank, together with ISAT, MCAT, or UCAT ® ANZ. Previous tertiary study does not move an international applicant onto the domestic GPA-and-GAMSAT ® assessment. The exception the handbook describes is the Bachelor of Biomedicine quota from 2027, which includes international applicants and then requires GAMSAT ®. Chemistry must have been completed within five years. Equivalence can be Introduction to Chemistry (KRA161), Unilearn Chemistry (UNL21), or a pass in a level 100 or higher chemistry unit at an Australian or New Zealand university. English-language requirements apply, and the course page prints the accepted tests and study routes. The international CRICOS code for the BMedScMD is 107736D. Source: University of Tasmania, BMedScMD course page.

Special consideration is available where circumstances outside your control have affected access to education. The university does not waive the BMedScMD subject prerequisites through that process. Source: University of Tasmania, BMedScMD course page.

Commonwealth supported places are available for eligible domestic students. The student contribution, HECS-HELP, and the international tuition fee are printed on the course page for that intake. How a Commonwealth supported place works is set out by Study Assist. National rules for GEMSAS applications, GPA, and GAMSAT ® weighting at other schools stay on graduate-entry medicine requirements. Source: University of Tasmania, BMedScMD course page.

School leavers preparing for the admissions test can start with UCAT ® preparation. Applicants on the graduate stream can start with GAMSAT ® preparation. Use the course page for the threshold that applies to your intake before you decide whether a score is enough to apply.

UTAS medicine questions

Is UTAS medicine a four-year graduate MD?

UTAS medicine is the five-year Bachelor of Medical Science and Doctor of Medicine. Graduates enter that same degree. They do not enter a separate four-year Doctor of Medicine through GEMSAS. The course is full-time, with a maximum of seven years, and the university issues one testamur for the combined award.

What are the University of Tasmania medicine entry requirements?

School leavers need an ATAR or equivalent from the last five years, a valid UCAT ANZ score, and Year 12 chemistry and English within five years. They must not already have commenced diploma-level tertiary study. Applicants with a completed bachelor degree or higher are considered on GPA and GAMSAT, unless they are on the Bachelor of Medical Research pathway or the later Bachelor of Biomedicine quota. The course page publishes the current ATAR, GPA, and GAMSAT minima. A published minimum does not guarantee an offer.

Do I sit the UCAT or the GAMSAT for UTAS medicine?

School leavers sit UCAT ANZ. The university ranks them on ATAR first and uses the three cognitive UCAT subtests, without situational judgement, when ATAR scores tie. Domestic applicants with previous higher education sit the GAMSAT, and UTAS accepts the same sittings as GEMSAS. Domestic school leavers cannot substitute ISAT or MCAT. The Aboriginal Entry Pathway does not require either admissions test.

Does the University of Tasmania interview for medicine?

Standard selection does not use an interview. Offers follow the academic rank and the admissions test, within the places at each campus. Applicants on the Aboriginal Entry Pathway do interview with the Medicine Admissions Committee, and they still lodge the ordinary university application.

Is the University of Tasmania part of GEMSAS?

The University of Tasmania is not a GEMSAS school. Domestic applicants apply directly to the university. Graduate applicants still sit the GAMSAT, and the sittings the university accepts match the GEMSAS sittings. An application to a GEMSAS school is a separate application.

Can I study the whole UTAS medicine degree at Cradle Coast?

The program is offered at Hobart, Launceston, and Cradle Coast, and you can preference more than one campus. The Tasmanian Rural Training Stream holds places for students who commit to all five years at Cradle Coast in Burnie and its associated training sites. Clinical placements in the later years run through the clinical schools in Hobart, Launceston, and Burnie.

Are there rural and Aboriginal pathways into UTAS medicine?

Rural applicants record MM2–MM7 residence on the ordinary application through the Rural Application Process. Half of domestic places are reserved for rural students, and at least three quarters of domestic places go to Tasmanian applicants. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants can use the Aboriginal Entry Pathway, which does not require UCAT ANZ or GAMSAT and does include an interview. About 30% of domestic students are enrolled in the Bonded Medical Program.
