University of Wollongong medicine is the four-year Doctor of Medicine taught by the Graduate School of Medicine. UOW medicine, for an applicant, means three connected things: the UOW MD itself, the UOW bonus used in selection, and UOW pre med as the name of this university's Bachelor of Pre-Medicine, Science and Health. This page stays with that program. The national steps from school or a first degree through to internship sit on the pathway guide . How graduate-entry schools compare with one another sits on the admissions guide . UCAT ® results and the general shape of an MMI sit on their own guides: UCAT ® scores and the guide to MMIs .
UOW publishes the GPA minimum, the GAMSAT ® minimum, fees, and the dates for each intake on its own admissions pages. Use those pages for the cycle you are applying in. The explanation below is the structure of the program and of selection.
The UOW MD is a four-year, full-time professional degree. Each academic year runs for about 42 weeks. The Australian Medical Council accredits the program. After graduation, unconditional registration in New South Wales follows a supervised internship through the NSW Health Education and Training Institute. Graduates who complete that training can apply for registration in Australia and New Zealand. International graduates are not automatically entitled to an internship, to registration, or to a provider number in Australia. UOW Doctor of Medicine course . The steps after medical school are set out in how to become a doctor .
Wollongong sits in the national list of Australian medical schools . How Australian medical degrees are ranked sits on the MD ranking page.
The first 18 months are based on a campus, with some community placements. The following two and a half years are mainly clinical. Phase 2 is 12 months across clinical disciplines. Phase 3 is 12 months in an integrated clinical clerkship. The final six months focus on healthcare teams and readiness for internship. The course requires 115 weeks of placement. Credit for prior learning is not available. UOW Doctor of Medicine course .
Clinical placements are concentrated in regional, rural, and remote New South Wales. Every domestic student does Phase 3 in a regional or rural location. A rural placement cannot be guaranteed for an international student. UOW Doctor of Medicine course .
Phase 1 is at Wollongong, Shoalhaven (Nowra), or Southern Highlands (Moss Vale). Clinical sites also include the Illawarra, Murrumbidgee, Clarence Valley, Northern Rivers, Central West, and Outback, and those regions can change. The school allocates placements. Students need to be able to relocate in rural New South Wales, including for up to a full academic year. UOW domestic admissions, General Entry .
There are two medical education tracks, plus a stream inside the first.
The Rural-Regional Combined track starts Phase 1 at Wollongong, Southern Highlands, or Shoalhaven. Places are Commonwealth supported, unbonded or bonded. A bonded place includes a return-of-service commitment, and the Department of Health publishes the current obligation. For 2027, UOW describes 54 places in this track, at least 32 of them for rural entry. UOW domestic admissions, General Entry .
The Health Access Stream keeps that structure and adds a stronger focus on general practice and community care in the Illawarra, Shellharbour, Kiama, and Shoalhaven. UOW's domestic page places Phase 1 at Wollongong or Shoalhaven. GEMSAS names Wollongong. Confirm the campus list before you nominate a track. For 2027, UOW describes 10 places in the stream, in addition to the 54, at least 6 of them for rural entry. UOW domestic admissions, General Entry and GEMSAS, University of Wollongong .
The Rural End-to-End track requires the student to live and study in a rural New South Wales location, chosen by the school, for all four years. Phase 1 is at Shoalhaven or Southern Highlands. For 2027, UOW describes 30 places, at least 17 of them for rural entry. UOW domestic admissions, General Entry .
GEMSAS lists about 109 places for 2027: 37 unbonded Commonwealth supported places, 27 bonded places, 30 rural end-to-end places, and up to 15 international places. The 54 combined-track places and the 10 Health Access places match the 37 unbonded and 27 bonded places. Read the GEMSAS school page again for a later intake. GEMSAS, University of Wollongong .
An offer is for one place type, one campus, and one year. Accepting it accepts that track. Transfer between tracks, place types, or campuses is not available, and a place cannot be deferred. Someone who cannot start re-applies. You nominate campus, place type, and track in GEMSAS and again on UOW's form. UOW publishes that deadline on the admissions page. UOW domestic admissions, General Entry .
Domestic applicants are Australian citizens, Australian permanent residents, including humanitarian visa holders, and New Zealand citizens. General entry and rural entry both go through GEMSAS. The qualifying degree can be in any field. It is an AQF level 7 degree of at least three years full-time equivalent, from an Australian university or a recognised overseas institution, and final-year students can apply. A two-year bachelor degree or a one-year conversion degree is not normally accepted. An accelerated degree that contains three full-time-equivalent years in two calendar years is accepted. The degree must have been completed within ten years of the application closing date, unless the applicant has since completed one full-time-equivalent year at Graduate Diploma level or higher, or UOW approves a currency waiver. The waiver deadline is on the admissions page. UOW domestic admissions, General Entry .
For 2027 entry the weighted GPA is a hurdle. After it is cleared, it is left out of the interview rank and the place rank. GEMSAS calculates it from the last 3.0 full-time-equivalent years, weighting the most recent year by three, the year before by two, and the year before that by one. The admissions page lists which study counts and publishes the minimum for that intake. UOW domestic admissions, General Entry .
Domestic general and rural applicants sit the GAMSAT ®. What the GAMSAT ® is is the exam overview. For 2027 entry that result is a hurdle as well, and it is left out of both ranks once it is cleared. UOW publishes the minimum overall score and the minimum in each section on the domestic admissions page. No other entrance exam is accepted for these applicants. ACER publishes how long a sitting stays valid. UOW domestic admissions, General Entry .
School-leaver medicine uses a different test. UCAT ® for medicine and UCAT ® scores explain that test and how to read a result.
Completed medical studies overseas, an existing medical qualification, or incomplete medical studies make an applicant ineligible. A humanitarian visa holder with incomplete medical studies can ask the Graduate School of Medicine. Transfer from another medical program is not possible. UOW domestic admissions, General Entry .
General entry is for domestic applicants without a rural origin. Rural entry is a separate pool for applicants who have lived in a Modified Monash Model MM2 to MM7 area for five consecutive years or ten cumulative years. That evidence goes on the GEMSAS form. A location can be checked on the Health Workforce Locator using Modified Monash 2023. GEMSAS, University of Wollongong .
GEMSAS says the majority of MD places are reserved for students of rural origin. GEMSAS, University of Wollongong . The bonus guide describes the cohorts as generally 60 to 80 percent from a rural background, and says that in recent cycles the majority of eligible rural-entry applicants who put UOW first received an offer. Outcomes change by year, and an offer is not guaranteed. UOW MD Admissions Bonus Guide 2026 . Applicants from any state are encouraged to put UOW first if this is the program they want. UOW Rural Entry Pathway .
Inside the rural pool, UOW adds a rurality adjustment on top of the bonuses, using the GEMSAS classification in three tiers: MM2, then MM3 to MM5, then MM6 and MM7. There is no separate form for that adjustment. GEMSAS, University of Wollongong .
UOW was the only medical school in New South Wales awarded Commonwealth funding in 2024 for a rural end-to-end program. Rural-entry applicants with a demonstrated New South Wales rural origin, who put UOW first and meet every minimum, are offered a guaranteed interview. The bonus guide ties the evidence for that guarantee to Bonus 8. GEMSAS, University of Wollongong and UOW MD Admissions Bonus Guide 2026 .
General and rural applicants also sit Casper . Format, dates, cost, and how to read a result sit on that page. UOW sets a minimum eligible score from each cohort. The same name, date of birth, and email need to appear on the GEMSAS application, the Casper registration, and the bonus form. UOW points applicants to Acuity Insights for fees and sitting dates. UOW domestic admissions, General Entry .
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants can apply directly, which UOW encourages, or through GEMSAS. The pathway assesses a weighted GPA, confirmation of Aboriginality or Torres Strait Islander descent, an MMI, and a community interview with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community members and university staff. GEMSAS states that this pathway does not require Casper or GAMSAT ®. UOW's aim is that 15 percent of places come from this pathway. The application window is on the pathway page, and GEMSAS records no fee for the direct application. UOW Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Pathway and GEMSAS, University of Wollongong .
International applicants apply directly and are assessed by UOW. The course page asks for transcripts, MCAT or GAMSAT ® results, English-language documents where they are required, and a passport copy. English requirements, tuition, and dates are on UOW's pages. GEMSAS records no fee for the direct application and lists up to 15 international places for 2027. UOW Doctor of Medicine course and GEMSAS, University of Wollongong .
UOW pre med is this university's wording for the Bachelor of Pre-Medicine, Science and Health. It is a three-year degree, or the part-time equivalent, taught on campus. Students take anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pharmacology, public health, and medical ethics, and major in Biomolecular Medicine or Medical Physiology. From the first year there are community volunteer and enrichment activities. UOW encourages high-achieving applicants from all backgrounds, and particularly Indigenous and rural applicants. UOW Bachelor of Pre-Medicine, Science and Health .
The degree is also a science and health qualification in its own right. UOW lists careers such as medical scientist, pathology scientist, laboratory manager, and research scientist alongside further study. UOW Bachelor of Pre-Medicine, Science and Health . School leavers can apply through UOW Early Admission or through the Universities Admissions Centre. Other domestic applicants apply through UAC. The course page gives UAC code 757500 for Wollongong and 757505 for Liverpool. UOW publishes the current selection rank on that page. UOW Bachelor of Pre-Medicine, Science and Health .
Finishing the bachelor degree leaves the MD admissions requirements in place: the qualifying-degree rules, the GPA hurdle, GAMSAT ®, Casper, the bonus form, and the interview, unless a separate pathway applies. Choosing an undergraduate degree, changing career, or comparing graduate entry with school-leaver entry is the wider job of how to become a doctor . UOW also offers other bachelor degrees in medical and health sciences. Those are different courses from this pre-medicine degree and from the MD.
UOW currently describes a guaranteed MD interview for students of this bachelor degree in two documents, and the conditions are not the same.
The course page says applicants must meet every minimum entry requirement and list UOW as their first preference in GEMSAS. It then ranks Bachelor of Pre-Medicine, Science and Health students on Casper, and offers a guaranteed interview to the top 15 in the rural pathway and the top 15 in the general pathway. UOW Bachelor of Pre-Medicine, Science and Health .
The admissions bonus guide for the 2026–2027 cycle says the applicant must put UOW first, meet every minimum admission requirement, and have a weighted GPA of 6.5 or higher when the application is assessed. The guarantee is used once, on the first eligible application, no more than two years after the bachelor degree is completed. The applicant also has to claim Bonus 1, Bonus 9, and Bonus 10 on the bonus form and nominate the pre-medicine interview guarantee there. UOW MD Admissions Bonus Guide 2026 .
Use the bonus guide for the cycle you apply in, and ask the Graduate School of Medicine if the course page still shows the top-15 wording. A guaranteed interview is an interview. A place still depends on the offer ranking described below.
The UOW bonus is a set of UOW MD Admissions bonuses. They recognise experiences UOW wants in the cohort. Each approved bonus has equal weight, bonuses add together, and an applicant can claim every bonus they are eligible for. Many bonuses have an equivalent for applicants from Aotearoa New Zealand, set out in the guide. The bonus form is an extra step beside GEMSAS. An application with no bonus form can still be assessed, without any UOW bonus added. UOW domestic admissions, General Entry .
How other graduate-entry schools build a rank, including GPA and GAMSAT ® weightings, is compared on medical school entry requirements . The bonuses below are UOW's own system.
For 2027 entry, applicants who clear the GPA and GAMSAT ® hurdles are ranked for interview on 50 percent Casper and 50 percent UOW MD Admissions bonuses. Place offers are then ranked on 70 percent interview and 30 percent admissions bonuses. If the applicant interviewed at another GEMSAS school, that interview score is standardised and used in place of a UOW interview. GPA, GAMSAT ®, and Casper are left out of the place formula. UOW domestic admissions, General Entry .
The guide says a bonus improves the assessment score. A place still depends on the whole application and on that year's cohort. UOW MD Admissions Bonus Guide 2026 .
The summaries below are the eligibility outlines on UOW's domestic admissions page. The bonus guide has the documents, the statutory-declaration wording, and the New Zealand equivalents. UOW tells applicants to read that guide again each cycle because eligibility changes. UOW domestic admissions, General Entry .
Anyone claiming a bonus lodges the UOW MD Admissions Bonus Form, including when no extra documents are required. The form opens with the GEMSAS application and closes on the date in the guide. It has to be completed in one sitting. Where the guide asks for a statutory declaration, that is one witnessed Commonwealth statutory declaration, with a numbered paragraph for each bonus that needs it. A bonus can be refused if the form is missing, the documents do not match the guide, or the criteria are not met. A false or misleading statement in a Commonwealth statutory declaration is a serious offence, and UOW can cancel the application, withdraw an interview or a place, and exclude the person from the MD. UOW domestic admissions, General Entry .
For 2027 entry, domestic interviews are a live online multiple mini-interview. UOW publishes the interview week on the admissions page. The stations are written around communication, an empathetic and ethical approach, reflection, teamwork, and decision-making in clinical and community settings, including care in rural, regional, and remote communities and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health. Applicants who are invited receive the process detail after interview offers. UOW domestic admissions, General Entry .
The guide to MMIs explains how a multiple mini-interview is organised. UOW's own use of the result is the 70 percent interview and 30 percent bonus formula above. Someone who has already interviewed at another GEMSAS school can have that score standardised and used for a UOW place. UOW domestic admissions, General Entry .
UOW does not allow generative AI in any part of MD admissions. The application and the interview are meant to be the applicant's own work. UOW can disqualify an applicant, withdraw an offer, or require a student to withdraw from the program if that rule is broken. UOW domestic admissions, General Entry .
UOW's domestic admissions page, the rural and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander pathway pages, the GEMSAS school entry, and the bonus guide are the sources for the current cycle. Read them for the GEMSAS opening and closing dates, the bonus-form dates, the Casper sittings, the currency-waiver deadline, the interview window, and the nomination-form deadline. Those dates move. The published GPA hurdle and the published GAMSAT ® hurdle move with the cycle as well, and both pages state the figures UOW is using. UOW domestic admissions, General Entry and GEMSAS, University of Wollongong . How to read a GAMSAT ® result, apart from UOW's hurdle, is on GAMSAT ® scores .
Commonwealth supported students pay a student contribution. UOW points to its fees pages for the amount, and says the figure can change. Casper fees are on the Acuity Insights site UOW links to. International tuition is on the course page. The direct Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander application and the direct international application are recorded by GEMSAS as having no application fee. That is separate from tuition and from any GEMSAS charge. UOW domestic admissions, General Entry and GEMSAS, University of Wollongong .
Before classes start, a successful applicant needs a current Provide First Aid certificate. An Australian certificate uses code HLTAID011 and must have been completed within the past three years. The student pays for that course. NSW Health also requires immunisation, identity, a code of conduct, a working with children check, and a police check. Placement can be refused if that evidence is still missing four weeks after commencement. UOW asks anyone who may need adjustments to contact the Graduate School of Medicine early. Inherent requirements follow the Medical Deans of Australia and New Zealand guidance. UOW domestic admissions, General Entry and UOW Doctor of Medicine course .
The UOW MD is a four-year, full-time graduate-entry degree. Domestic general and rural applicants need a qualifying bachelor degree, sit the GAMSAT ®, sit Casper, and apply through GEMSAS. The current GPA and GAMSAT ® hurdles are on UOW's domestic admissions page. After those hurdles are cleared, UOW ranks the interview from Casper and the UOW bonus, then ranks a place from the interview and the bonus.
UOW MD Admissions bonuses are twelve equally weighted, cumulative adjustments. They cover first preference for UOW, a registered health profession, service, sustained work, rural work, rural high school, Illawarra residence, New South Wales rural residence, a UOW degree, academic excellence on top of that degree, a postgraduate Indigenous health qualification, and financial disadvantage. The claim is a separate form from the GEMSAS application. For 2027 entry they are half of the interview rank, with Casper, and 30 percent of the place rank, with the interview.
A bonus improves the assessment score. UOW's bonus guide says a place still depends on the whole application and on the cohort in that year. An interview guarantee for eligible New South Wales rural applicants, or for eligible pre-medicine graduates, is a guarantee of an interview when its conditions are met. The place rank is still the interview and the bonuses.
UOW pre-med is the Bachelor of Pre-Medicine, Science and Health, a three-year degree with majors in Biomolecular Medicine or Medical Physiology. It does not replace the MD admissions requirements. UOW's course page and its admissions bonus guide describe the interview guarantee differently: the course page uses a Casper ranking and the top 15 students in each of the rural and general pathways, while the bonus guide for the 2026–2027 cycle uses a weighted GPA of 6.5, first preference for UOW, and Bonuses 1, 9, and 10, once only and within two years of finishing the degree. Follow the bonus guide for your cycle and check with the Graduate School of Medicine.
Domestic general and rural entry to the UOW MD uses the GAMSAT ®, then Casper, the UOW bonus, and an interview. UCAT ® ANZ is the admissions test used for school-leaver medicine. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander pathway applicants are assessed on GPA, confirmation of identity, an MMI, and a community interview, and GEMSAS states they are not required to sit Casper or GAMSAT ®.
UOW states that deferral of a place is not possible. An offer is for a specified place type, campus, and year, and someone who cannot accept re-applies for a later intake. Transfer between tracks, place types, or campuses is not available.
Phase 1 is at Wollongong, Shoalhaven, or Southern Highlands, depending on the track. Later clinical placements are allocated across regional, rural, and remote New South Wales, and can require a move for up to a year. Domestic students complete Phase 3 in a regional or rural location. End-to-end students live and study in a rural New South Wales location for all four years.
