UQ medicine is the University of Queensland Doctor of Medicine (MD), and the school-leaver routes that lead into it. This page explains the four-year MD, undergraduate and provisional entry, the entry requirements (including subject prerequisites), and the Queensland medicine cut-off UQ uses for its own places. The calendar, fees, and the score that actually received an offer change with each intake. Those figures belong on the University of Queensland, GEMSAS, QTAC, CQUniversity, and UniSQ pages for the year you apply.
The broader choice between school-leaver and graduate pathways sits on how to become a doctor in Australia. UQ is one school on that map. A comparison of every Australian medical school stays on Australian medical schools. A national MD ranking is on MD ranking.
The Doctor of Medicine at UQ is a four-year full-time AQF Level 9 program, code 5740. UQ states that the Australian Medical Council accredits it and the Medical Board of Australia recognises it. It starts in Semester 1. The program page publishes that date. From 2023 the degree is integrated: students join a learning community, Year 1 covers medical sciences and the role of the doctor, Year 2 is clinical reasoning in practice, Year 3 is hospital and community immersion, and the final semester is Transition to Practice as a pre-intern. UQ dental science is a separate degree. Its UCAT ® entry is covered with UCAT ® for dentistry.
Provisional students complete a first bachelor degree at UQ, then base all four MD years in Greater Brisbane. Teaching is through clinical units, teaching hospitals, and St Lucia. Some placements fall outside metropolitan Brisbane, and students fund the travel and living costs. Sources: UQ provisional entry pathways and UQ Doctor of Medicine program.
Graduates can study the same MD on a domestic regional pathway. Central Queensland–Wide Bay students spend all four years based from Rockhampton, or from Bundaberg with Hervey Bay in Years 3 and 4. Darling Downs–South West students spend all four years based from Toowoomba. Accepting the offer commits you to those four years. A transfer needs exceptional circumstances and a spare place. School leavers reach the same regions through CQUniversity or UniSQ, covered below. The medical award is UQ's Doctor of Medicine.
US citizens and permanent residents can apply for the Ochsner MD: two years in Brisbane and two years in New Orleans with Ochsner Health. It is separate from the domestic MD. Source: UQ Doctor of Medicine program.
School leavers enter UQ medicine before they hold a bachelor degree. There are three domestic routes: provisional entry with a choice of first degree, a six-year Bachelor of Medical Science / Doctor of Medicine vertical dual in Greater Brisbane, and the regional pathways taught first at CQUniversity or UniSQ. School-leaver selection uses ATAR and UCAT ®. Graduate entry uses GPA and GAMSAT ®. The difference between those exams is covered on UCAT ® and GAMSAT ® pathways. How UCAT ® is used for undergraduate medicine, beyond UQ's own rules, is on UCAT ® for undergraduate medicine.
Provisional entry is for students in their final year of high school, on their first attempt at Year 12 or the equivalent. Apply in that final year, even if results come later. The minimums are an adjusted ATAR of 95 (or equivalent), Queensland Year 12 English (or equivalent), a UCAT ® ANZ aggregate from the year you apply, and an MMI that year. An offer is for a first bachelor degree at UQ. UQ asks you to nominate that degree after the offer, so you do not apply for it separately. To start the MD, finish the degree in the minimum time, reach a GPA of 5.0 out of 7 across UQ undergraduate study, and complete the subject prerequisites. UQ lists recommended first degrees by how readily they cover that science. Sources: UQ provisional entry requirements and UQ assumed knowledge for the MD.
Australian Year 12 students, including those overseas, and International Baccalaureate students in Australia apply through QTAC. UQ lists 721302 for a non-bonded Commonwealth-supported place and 721402 for a bonded place. You can preference both and are offered the highest one for which you are competitive. The how-to-apply page repeats itself, and one block lists only 721302, so use the codes shown for your applicant type on the day you apply. Applicants who are not on an Australian Year 12 or an IB in Australia apply directly to UQ. That page currently tells them to select program code 2303. Closing dates and the application fee are on the same page. Source: UQ provisional entry, how to apply.
From a 2027 start, Year 12 students who want Greater Brisbane and already know they want the MD can apply for one vertical dual: two years of pre-medicine, then the four-year MD, with both awards at the end of six years. UQ describes it as at least a year shorter than routes that require a full bachelor degree first. Provisional entry continues beside it. Program code 2578, QTAC code 721502. Minimum entry is an adjusted ATAR of 95, General English (Units 3 and 4, grade C), Mathematical Methods (Units 3 and 4, grade C), a UCAT ® ANZ aggregate from the application year, and an MMI that year. Chemistry or Biology is recommended and is not required. UQ lists about 20 domestic places a year. Progression, on UQ's announcement, means finishing pre-medicine within two years and passing every course. The application window and Semester 1 date are on the program page. Read this dual degree as the route into the MD. UQ still lists other bachelor degrees for students who want a different first qualification. CQUniversity and UniSQ teach the undergraduate years of UQ's regional pathways. Offers for those courses come from the partner university. The Doctor of Medicine that follows is UQ's.
CQUniversity's Bachelor of Medical Science (Pathway to Medicine), course CM17, is for domestic school leavers at Rockhampton and Bundaberg. CQUniversity describes two years at CQU, a third year that also counts as MD Year 1, and both degrees after six years. UQ places the four MD years at the Rural Clinical School in Central Queensland or Wide Bay. The progression rule differs by page: UQ says passing each CQU unit guarantees MD entry, while the CQUniversity handbook says direct entry follows a GPA of 5.0 or more. Read both for your intake. Sources: CQUniversity, Bachelor of Medical Science (Pathway to Medicine), UQ, Central Queensland–Wide Bay provisional pathway, and CQUniversity handbook, CM17.
UniSQ's current Toowoomba course is the Bachelor of Medical Science (Medicine Pathway), code BMSP, three years full-time, for students completing Year 12 in the year they apply. UniSQ says a GPA of 5.0 gives direct entry to the UQ MD at the Toowoomba Rural Clinical School. UQ also requires the degree in the minimum time, and its regional page still uses the older title Bachelor of Biomedical Sciences (Medicine Pathway). Apply with the name and code on UniSQ's course page: QTAC 906941 (Toowoomba), 906961 (Bonded Medical Program), and 906951 (First Nations). The published minimum is an adjusted ATAR of 95, English (Units 3 and 4, grade C), and General Mathematics, Mathematical Methods, or Specialist Mathematics (Units 3 and 4, grade C). Biology, Chemistry, or Physics is recommended. Shortlisted applicants sit an MMI after UCAT ® ANZ. UniSQ ranks offers 25% UCAT ®, 25% ATAR, and 50% MMI, in tier order, with the MMI as the tiebreaker. The competitive UCAT ® aggregate is on UniSQ's admissions notes. Sources: UniSQ, Bachelor of Medical Science (Medicine Pathway), UQ, Darling Downs–South West provisional pathway, and UniSQ, other admission considerations.
University of Queensland medicine entry requirements depend on the route. Graduate entry asks for a key degree, a UQ GPA, GAMSAT ® or MCAT, an MMI, and two subject prerequisites. School-leaver entry asks for ATAR, UCAT ®, and an MMI, then a further GPA and prerequisite rule before the MD starts. The national picture of how GEMSAS schools weigh GPA and GAMSAT ®, including where UQ's credit-value method differs, is on graduate entry requirements across Australia. What a GAMSAT ® result means, as distinct from UQ's own hurdle, is on GAMSAT ® scores.
Graduate entry is for a completed key degree, or the final year of a first bachelor degree. The key degree is a bachelor of at least three years full-time at AQF Level 7 or above. A later honours year, graduate or postgraduate diploma, masters, or doctorate becomes the key degree once it is the most recently completed award. A first key degree must be finished by 31 December in the application year. A later one must be finished by the end of Semester 1 if it is to be assessed that year. The degree must fall within 10 years before the MD starts, unless you have since completed at least 0.5 full-time-equivalent year of bachelor-or-higher coursework at a UQ GPA of 5.0. Grades from that extra study stay out of the key-degree GPA, and credit or work experience does not make up the 0.5 year. Sources: UQ graduate entry requirements and GEMSAS, University of Queensland.
The GPA floor is 5.0 on UQ's 7-point scale. UQ weights by credit value, using letter grades, across every subject studied while enrolled in the key degree, including subjects that did not count toward the award, credit from other study, and failed attempts later repeated. Combined and dual degrees include both awards. A GEMSAS GPA between 5.0 and 5.75 is checked against this UQ method. Source: GEMSAS, University of Queensland.
Domestic applicants need at least 50 in each GAMSAT ® section, from a sitting within four years before the MD starts. Any section under 50 is ineligible. UQ averages the three sections equally and rounds to six decimal places. It does not publish a separate minimum for that average. International applicants need an MCAT of at least 504 in the same four-year window, or a GAMSAT ® that meets the section rule, then an MMI. These floors do not guarantee an interview or a place. The MD English requirement on the program page is IELTS 7 overall and 7 in each band. Other accepted tests are listed there. GEMSAS applies that same English rule to domestic applicants from a non-English-speaking background. Sources: UQ graduate entry requirements, GEMSAS, University of Queensland, and UQ Doctor of Medicine program.
Domestic graduates apply through GEMSAS. International graduates apply directly to UQ for program 5740 and, once accepted full-time, can apply for a student visa (subclass 500), which includes the Genuine Student requirement. Sources: UQ graduate entry, how to apply, and UQ Doctor of Medicine program.
The MD requires second-year cell and tissue biology and systems physiology, finished within 10 years of starting. At UQ those courses are Integrative Cell and Tissue Biology (BIOM2011) and Systems Physiology (BIOM2012). Graduate applicants complete them before entry. Provisional applicants complete them before the MD starts. UQ's equivalency table covers other Australian and New Zealand courses, and UQ asks you to write if yours is missing. The CQU and UniSQ pathway degrees are built to supply the same knowledge, alongside the GPA and timing rules for each pathway. Sources: UQ prerequisite table for domestic applicants, UQ assumed knowledge for the MD, UQ, Central Queensland–Wide Bay provisional pathway, and UQ, Darling Downs–South West provisional pathway.
UQ runs a domestic graduate pathway through the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies Unit. Eligibility is a key degree, or the final year of a bachelor degree, confirmation of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander status, a semi-structured interview with the Unit, and an MMI in the year of application. UQ encourages a GAMSAT ® result. On this pathway, sitting the test is optional. You can apply directly to the Unit, through GEMSAS, or both. Offers through this pathway follow the recommendation of the semi-structured interview panel. Students can preference Greater Brisbane, Central Queensland, Wide Bay, or Darling Downs–South West for all four years of the MD. Source: UQ Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander MD graduate entry.
School leavers have a separate provisional pathway through the same Unit. The steps are on UQ's Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander pathways page. Source: UQ Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander MD pathways.
The Queensland medicine cut-off here is the competitive threshold for UQ's own Doctor of Medicine. Griffith, Bond, and James Cook each publish theirs. A GPA of 5.0, a GAMSAT ® section score of 50, or an adjusted ATAR of 95 only lets an application be considered. UQ says the interview and offer scores change with every intake and cannot be predicted ahead of time. Recent domestic and international GPA, GAMSAT ®, and MCAT ranges stay on UQ's graduate entry page. Source: UQ graduate entry requirements.
For domestic graduates, Schedule 3 ranks interviews as 50% unweighted GAMSAT ® and 50% GPA, with GPA as the tiebreaker. Offers are 25% GPA, 25% unweighted GAMSAT ® (or overall MCAT), and 50% MMI. The Executive Dean sets a minimum MMI score, and the MMI splits a tie on the final score. GEMSAS states the same 50:50 interview rule. Sources: UQ Admission to Coursework Procedure, Schedule 3 (2025), and GEMSAS, University of Queensland.
Regional graduate applicants are ranked in their nominated pathway before Greater Brisbane: Tier 1 (five consecutive years, or 10 years, in that region), then Tier 2 (another Australian rural background on the same test), then Tier 3 (any other applicant who wants regional Queensland). An applicant without a regional offer is ranked with Greater Brisbane. Offers then run in merit order, non-bonded Commonwealth-supported places before bonded places. You may say which place types you will accept. GEMSAS does not use that preference when it decides the offer type. Sources: GEMSAS, University of Queensland and UQ graduate entry, how to apply.
UQ holds a rural-background sub-quota for people who have lived in a Modified Monash Model 2–7 area (2023) for five consecutive years or 10 years in total. The graduate entry page says 28% of new domestic places. GEMSAS says 28.5% of places. Use the figure for your intake. GEMSAS also says UQ adds two adjustments to the unweighted GAMSAT ® average for rural-background applicants competing for non-bonded places. Sources: UQ graduate entry requirements and GEMSAS, University of Queensland.
School-leaver interviews, for provisional entry and the vertical dual, use the UCAT ® ANZ aggregate. UQ ignores UCAT ® annotations, says it is reviewing the aggregate after changes to the test, and sends at least half of domestic MMI invitations to Queensland Year 12 students. The lowest aggregate invited, and the ATAR range of offers, are on UQ's pages for that intake. How to read the result itself is on UCAT ® scores. Station format is on how multiple mini-interviews work. Graduate interviews are online: accept the GEMSAS invite, then book with UQ by the date on the invitation. Sources: UQ provisional entry, how to apply, UQ MD direct entry, and GEMSAS, University of Queensland.
UQ, GEMSAS, and QTAC publish the dates, place counts, and fees for each intake. What stays stable is the order.
School leavers sit UCAT ® ANZ in the year they apply, then use QTAC for Greater Brisbane provisional entry or the vertical dual, or the CQUniversity or UniSQ course page for a regional undergraduate pathway. Domestic graduates need a current GAMSAT ® before the GEMSAS window. What the GAMSAT ® involves covers the exam. For a regional graduate place, rank UQ as preference 1, 2, or 3, then choose the pathway and region on UQ's preference page. A region is not guaranteed. Participating GEMSAS schools share interviews, so an eligible applicant is invited once. International graduate rounds, direct provisional applications, and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander graduate pathway each publish their own closing dates. Offer deferral is limited under Schedule 3. Sources: UQ provisional entry, how to apply, UQ graduate entry, how to apply, and GEMSAS, University of Queensland.
The official counts describe different groups, so they should not be added into one cohort.
GEMSAS lists indicative 2027 graduate places, and says they can change: 107 Commonwealth-supported and 43 bonded, covering Greater Brisbane, both regional pathways, and the rural quota. International places, including UQ-Ochsner, are listed as 190. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander places have no set quota. Source: GEMSAS, University of Queensland.
UQ's graduate entry page gives approximate annual figures of about 275 domestic places and about 100 international places across provisional and graduate entry, including about 60 in Central Queensland–Wide Bay and about 36 in Darling Downs–South West. The vertical dual is a further group of about 20 domestic places a year. Sources: UQ graduate entry requirements and UQ MD direct entry.
Domestic MD places are Commonwealth supported, bonded or non-bonded. UQ says 28.5% of its Doctor of Medicine Commonwealth-supported offers are bonded: a commitment, after the MD, to work in an eligible regional, rural, or remote area for the period set by the Bonded Medical Program. Source: UQ Doctor of Medicine program.
UQ publishes the student contribution for a Commonwealth-supported place, and international tuition, on the Doctor of Medicine program page for the year of enrolment. Both are reviewed each year. Provisional students also pay for the undergraduate degree. CQUniversity and UniSQ publish the fees for their pathway degrees. Application fees, the student services fee, and extra costs such as first aid, a police check, vaccinations, and placement travel are listed on the relevant university page. Source: UQ Doctor of Medicine program.
Both. Graduates apply for the four-year Doctor of Medicine with a key degree, GPA, GAMSAT ® or MCAT, and an MMI. School leavers can use provisional entry and choose a first degree at UQ, apply for the six-year Bachelor of Medical Science / Doctor of Medicine from the 2027 intake, or start at CQUniversity or UniSQ and continue into UQ's regionally delivered MD.
The published minimum is a UQ GPA of 5.0 out of 7.0 and at least 50 in each GAMSAT ® section. UQ averages the three sections equally. International applicants can use an MCAT of at least 504 instead. These are floors. UQ's graduate entry page publishes the higher ranges from recent intakes, and those ranges change.
For UQ graduate entry, interviews are ranked on 50% unweighted GAMSAT ® and 50% GPA. Offers are ranked on 25% GPA, 25% GAMSAT ® or MCAT, and 50% interview. School-leaver interviews use the UCAT ® ANZ aggregate, which UQ is reviewing after changes to the test. The lowest score invited, and the ATAR of students offered a place, are on UQ's pages for that intake. Other Queensland medical schools set their own cut-offs.
Yes. The MD requires second-year cell and tissue biology and systems physiology, finished within 10 years of starting. At UQ those courses are BIOM2011 and BIOM2012. UQ publishes equivalents from other universities. Provisional students complete them during the first degree. The CQU and UniSQ pathway degrees are built to cover the same knowledge.
They teach the undergraduate years of UQ's regional pathways. The Doctor of Medicine is UQ's degree, based at a UQ Rural Clinical School in Central Queensland, Wide Bay, or the Darling Downs–South West. Apply to CQUniversity or UniSQ for those school-leaver courses. Graduates who want the same regions apply to UQ through GEMSAS.
The closing day changes. Domestic graduates use the GEMSAS dates. Greater Brisbane school leavers and the vertical dual use QTAC. Regional school leavers use the CQUniversity or UniSQ dates. International graduates, and provisional applicants who are not on an Australian Year 12 or IB path, use the dates on UQ's how-to-apply pages.
Domestic places are Commonwealth supported, either bonded or non-bonded. UQ publishes the student contribution and the international tuition for the enrolment year on the Doctor of Medicine program page. A provisional or pathway student also pays for the undergraduate degree at UQ, CQUniversity, or UniSQ.
