Macquarie University medicine, for an applicant, is the Doctor of Medicine at Macquarie University in Sydney, and the Macquarie MMI that sits in front of an offer. This page explains that degree: how the four years are organised, who can apply, and how the interview is used. Care at Macquarie University Hospital is arranged by the hospital. The hospital is a teaching site for the degree, which is a separate task from applying to study there.

The Doctor of Medicine at Macquarie

The Doctor of Medicine at Macquarie is a four-year, full-time graduate-entry degree, taught in person at the North Ryde campus. Macquarie calls it the Macquarie MD and describes it as an extended masters at AQF Level 9, offered by the Faculty of Medicine, Health and Human Sciences. Source: Macquarie MD program and Source: Doctor of Medicine course page . It is one graduate route after a prior degree. The wider set of Australian routes sits on how to become a doctor , and the directory of which medical schools exist sits on Australian medical schools . Readers comparing prestige or competitiveness across programs can use MD ranking . This page stays with the Macquarie degree and the Macquarie MMI.

The Australian Medical Council lists the Doctor of Medicine as Macquarie's primary medical program, with accreditation to 31 March 2028 and a reaccreditation event in 2027. How the four years are divided

Year 1 is foundations of medical practice: applied medical sciences, clinical and consultation skills in simulation, and two units taken with Doctor of Physiotherapy students on the social aspects of health, Indigenous health, evidence-based practice, and professionalism. Year 2 is integrated clinical learning at Macquarie University Health and in general practice. Weekly cases carry the science, and students begin research skills and patient safety and quality in a critical-care setting. Source: Macquarie MD program

Year 3 is the core clinical year. On the standard stream it is a medicine and surgery block, a paediatrics and obstetrics and gynaecology block, and a block at Apollo Hospital in Hyderabad that includes emergency care, plus a longitudinal general practice attachment during the Australian placements. Students compare cases with peers in Australia and India, and they keep a research project going through the year, on health systems, patient safety and quality, clinical research, or public health. A general-practice-intensive stream replaces the India block for a small number of students chosen by expression of interest. Those students can still ask for an India elective in Year 4. Source: Macquarie MD program . The project is presented in the final year. Source: Doctor of Medicine course structure

Year 4 is advanced clinical placement: emergency medicine, mental health, and selective and elective placements that Macquarie describes as longer than the Year 3 blocks, then time to consolidate before internship. In Years 3 and 4, students are split into smaller cohorts for placements. Source: Macquarie MD program

Macquarie's own pages do not all use the same week count for the India block. Plan from the Macquarie MD pages for the intake you are entering.

Hospitals and other clinical sites

The campus GEMSAS lists for the degree is Balaclava Road, North Ryde, NSW 2109. The program requires clinical placements in Australian and international settings. Source: GEMSAS — Macquarie University . Australian sites named by the Faculty are Macquarie University Health, the Northern Sydney Local Health District, Northern Beaches Hospital, the Royal North Shore Hospital, and the MindSpot Clinic. The international experience is predominantly at Apollo Hospital in Hyderabad. Source: Macquarie MD clinical training placements

Macquarie University Health is the university-led academic health sciences centre on that campus. It brings the Faculty's teaching and research together with clinical care in Macquarie University Hospital and in the university's primary care and multi-specialty clinics. Source: Macquarie MD program . Before you apply, Macquarie asks you to judge whether you can attend the compulsory international placements. Source: Macquarie MD admission and key dates . GEMSAS also notes that international placements depend on travel restrictions. Source: GEMSAS — Macquarie University

A search for the hospital often means a patient wants an appointment or a bed. That booking is handled by the hospital. This page is about entry to the degree.

Applying for Macquarie University medicine

Applying for Macquarie University medicine starts from a bachelor degree and an admissions test, then an interview if you are invited. Domestic applicants apply through GEMSAS, the online application and matching system for participating graduate-entry medical schools, including Macquarie. Source: GEMSAS . International applicants apply to Macquarie. The minimum scores, the tuition figure, and the dates for an intake are published by the university and by GEMSAS, and they change. Use the guide for the year you are applying, rather than a reprinted floor from an earlier cycle. Source: Macquarie MD admission and key dates and Source: GEMSAS — Macquarie University

Bachelor degree, GPA, and the GAMSAT ®

The bachelor degree must be an Australian Qualifications Framework Level 7 qualification, or an overseas degree recognised as equivalent. You can apply in the final year. The qualification has to have been completed less than 10 years before the intended enrolment, unless accepted postgraduate study brings it back inside that window. One- and two-year conversion degrees are not accepted. A bachelor degree that includes credit from study below AQF Level 7 is not accepted either. Source: GEMSAS — Macquarie University

Postgraduate study that Macquarie will accept is a graduate diploma, a coursework masters, a higher degree research masters, or a PhD. Only one postgraduate qualification is used in the GPA, the highest or the most recent. Coursework postgraduate study must be finished, or scheduled to finish, by the date GEMSAS sets for that application year, and it must sit inside the 10-year window. A research masters or a PhD must already be complete at application, and must also sit inside 10 years. Source: GEMSAS — Macquarie University

Macquarie calculates a weighted GPA, and gives later study more weight. For a bachelor degree alone, the latest full-time-equivalent year is weighted by three, the year before by two, and the year before that by one. A standalone honours year takes the heaviest weight. Coursework postgraduate study is treated as a whole and weighted by three. A completed research masters or PhD is treated as a whole, weighted by three, and given the maximum GPA value of 7.0. Non-award units are left out. A Weighted Average Mark can be converted to a GPA for the GEMSAS ranking. Source: GEMSAS — Macquarie University

There is a published academic floor, as a weighted GPA or an equivalent WAM, and a published GAMSAT ® floor for the overall score and for each section. Macquarie states that entry is competitive and that the GPA of people actually selected for interview is likely to sit well above that floor. Meeting the floor does not guarantee an interview or a place. The numbers for the intake are on the GEMSAS Macquarie entry and the Macquarie MD admissions page. Source: GEMSAS — Macquarie University and Source: Doctor of Medicine course page . What the GAMSAT ® is explains the exam. GAMSAT ® scores explains how a result is read. Domestic applicants submit a GAMSAT ® result from within four years of the intended enrolment. Source: GEMSAS — Macquarie University

Human anatomy and human physiology are no longer prerequisites. Macquarie treats them as assumed knowledge for students who are about to start. Source: Macquarie MD admission and key dates

Macquarie adds 3 per cent to the weighted GPA of domestic Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants, domestic rural applicants, and Macquarie Bachelor of Clinical Science graduates. Someone in more than one of those groups is capped at 5 per cent. Source: Macquarie MD admission and key dates . The university's admissions page includes international Bachelor of Clinical Science graduates in the clinical-science adjustment. The GEMSAS Macquarie entry says bonus points are not available to international applicants. Use the guide that matches the application you are actually lodging. Source: GEMSAS — Macquarie University

Interview ranking, once the minima are met, is 50 per cent weighted GPA and 50 per cent GAMSAT ®. For an international applicant living outside Australia, that second half is the MCAT. A standard offer is then 50 per cent GPA and 50 per cent Multiple Mini Interview. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants considered through the Indigenous pathway are selected case by case. Source: GEMSAS — Macquarie University and Source: Macquarie MD admission and key dates . Other GEMSAS schools split those same ingredients differently. That national comparison is on graduate medical school entry requirements .

The Macquarie MD does not use the UCAT ®. Undergraduate medicine programs that do are covered on UCAT ® for medicine .

Domestic, Indigenous, and international applications

Domestic applicants lodge through GEMSAS and should read the GEMSAS Medicine Admissions Guide before they submit. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants can use that standard domestic path, the Indigenous Australian Pathway, or both. Source: Macquarie MD admission and key dates

The Indigenous pathway is individual consideration for interview and offer, with GAMSAT ® optional and support through the interview. Applicants need to be of Australian Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent, identify as such, and supply the evidence Macquarie and Walanga Muru require by the due date. The pathway is closed to international applicants. The GPA floor for the pathway is on the university's admissions page. Walanga Muru is the contact for advice. Source: GEMSAS — Macquarie University and Source: Macquarie MD admission and key dates

The GEMSAS Macquarie entry sets out the GPA, the GAMSAT ®, the adjustments, and the MMI. It does not describe a separate personal statement. International applicants do upload a compulsory supplementary form with a direct application. The form is an acknowledgement of statements about international placements and about criteria specific to the program. It is not given a mark. It is judged satisfactory or unsatisfactory. Source: GEMSAS — Macquarie University and Source: Macquarie MD international admissions guide

International applicants apply to Macquarie's international admissions, not through GEMSAS. An applicant living outside Australia can submit the MCAT or the GAMSAT ®. An MCAT result has to fall within three years of the intended enrolment, and the minimum total score is on the GEMSAS Macquarie entry. An international applicant who is living in Australia when they apply must submit the GAMSAT ®. Source: GEMSAS — Macquarie University

English language follows the same published rule for domestic and international applicants. Secondary and tertiary study taught and assessed in English in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the Republic of Ireland, South Africa, the United Kingdom, or the United States meets it. Otherwise Macquarie asks for an English test, taken in one sitting, less than two years before the intended enrolment. The band scores are on the GEMSAS Macquarie entry. Source: GEMSAS — Macquarie University

If the offer arrives before the degree is finished, it is conditional. Study has to be complete by the date in the offer, or the offer is withdrawn. An offer is for a specified year only. Macquarie does not grant a deferral. Someone who cannot start reapplies for a later year. Source: Macquarie MD admission and key dates and Source: GEMSAS — Macquarie University

Read the Health Course Requirements before you apply. Macquarie's inherent requirements were written with reference to the Medical Deans Australia and New Zealand guideline. International applicants are also pointed to NSW Health compliance, including immunisation, a police check, and a Working with Children check. Every place in the Doctor of Medicine is a full-fee place. Source: GEMSAS — Macquarie University . The course page treats the domestic charge as a fee-paying tuition fee and points eligible students to FEE-HELP for that tuition. The annual amount, and any scholarship value, is on the course page and the Macquarie MD fees information. GEMSAS publishes the intake quota and marks it as subject to change. The Bachelor of Clinical Science pathway

Domestic school leavers can apply for the Bachelor of Clinical Science through the Universities Admissions Centre and, after they finish it and meet the academic requirements, apply for the Doctor of Medicine through GEMSAS. Each course has its own admission rules. Completing the bachelor does not itself hold a medical place. Source: Macquarie MD undergraduate pathways

Graduates, and final-year students, who do apply for the MD are the group Macquarie has in mind for the GPA adjustment above. GEMSAS also reserves up to 30 interview places for Macquarie Bachelor of Clinical Science graduates and final-year students who might not otherwise have been invited. Source: GEMSAS — Macquarie University . The pathways page lists scholarships for those graduates. The amount is published there. Source: Macquarie MD undergraduate pathways

International school leavers can apply directly for a packaged Bachelor of Clinical Science and Doctor of Medicine: two years of the bachelor, then the four-year MD. A set quota applies. Moving from the bachelor into the MD without another admissions test depends on meeting the progression rules Macquarie publishes, including a WAM threshold in the degree and in the professional practice units. The secondary-school standard, the package interview, and the English requirement are on that same pathways page. Source: Macquarie MD undergraduate pathways

The Bachelor of Clinical Science is the Faculty's undergraduate route toward this MD. It is a different award from a Bachelor of Medical Science.

The Macquarie MMI

The Macquarie MMI is the interview Macquarie uses when it chooses who receives a Doctor of Medicine offer. Invited applicants move through a series of short stations. For a standard offer, the MMI is half the ranking and the GPA is the other half. The GAMSAT ® (or the MCAT, where that was the admissions test) is used to decide who is invited, and it is not in that final split. Source: GEMSAS — Macquarie University

Domestic applicants living in Australia attend in person at the Macquarie campus. International applicants are offered a modified MMI by videoconference, held in more than one round. The day, and the rounds, are on the admissions page for that intake. Source: GEMSAS — Macquarie University and Source: Macquarie MD admission and key dates . Macquarie describes the applicants it wants as people with strong tertiary results, a range of experience, the interpersonal skills of a medical student, and the resilience to work on the health of Australian and global communities. Source: Macquarie MD admission and key dates

Station design, timing, and practice belong to the guide to MMIs . Use that guide for how a multiple mini interview works, including the GEMSAS interview. Use this page for what Macquarie itself does with the score.

Offers follow the interview. Some are conditional. You accept or decline as the offer instructs, then meet the health-course requirements before enrolment. Source: Macquarie MD admission and key dates

Frequently asked questions

What is the Macquarie MMI?

The Macquarie MMI is a multiple mini interview: a series of short stations for applicants invited to interview for the Doctor of Medicine. Domestic applicants living in Australia attend in person on campus. International applicants sit a modified MMI by videoconference. For a standard offer, the MMI is half the ranking and the GPA is the other half. The date for the current intake is on Macquarie's admissions page. How stations work in general is covered in GradReady's guide to MMIs .

Does Macquarie medicine use the UCAT or the GAMSAT?

Domestic Doctor of Medicine applicants submit the GAMSAT ®, from a sitting within four years of the intended enrolment. International applicants living outside Australia can submit the MCAT or the GAMSAT ®. International applicants living in Australia when they apply submit the GAMSAT ®. The Macquarie MD does not use the UCAT ®. Published minimum scores are on the GEMSAS Macquarie entry, and interview selection usually sits above those floors.

Do I need a science degree for the Macquarie MD?

You need an AQF Level 7 bachelor degree, or a recognised overseas equivalent, completed less than 10 years before enrolment unless accepted postgraduate study updates that. Conversion degrees, and bachelor degrees that include credit from below AQF Level 7, are not accepted. Anatomy and physiology are no longer prerequisites. Macquarie treats them as assumed knowledge when you start.

Can a school leaver go straight into Macquarie medicine?

The Doctor of Medicine itself takes a finished bachelor degree, or a bachelor in its final year. Domestic school leavers can start with the Bachelor of Clinical Science through UAC, then apply for the MD through GEMSAS. That bachelor has its own rules and does not hold an MD place on its own. Graduates and final-year students from it are eligible for a GPA adjustment, and GEMSAS reserves up to 30 interview places for that group. International school leavers can apply for a two-year Bachelor of Clinical Science plus four-year MD package, with progression rules published by Macquarie.

Are Macquarie MD places Commonwealth supported?

Every Doctor of Medicine place is a full-fee place. The course page treats domestic tuition as a fee-paying charge and points eligible students to FEE-HELP. The current annual fee is on the Doctor of Medicine course page. GEMSAS publishes the quota for an intake and marks it as subject to change.

Can I defer a Macquarie medicine offer?

No. An offer is for a specified year. If you cannot start, you decline it and apply again for a later intake. An offer made before your degree is finished is conditional, and it is withdrawn if you miss the completion date in the offer.

I need a patient appointment at Macquarie University Hospital. Is this the right page?

No. Patient appointments and hospital admission are handled by the hospital. This page is for people applying to the Doctor of Medicine. Students in that degree do train in Macquarie University Hospital, as part of Macquarie University Health.
