UWA medical school: the Doctor of Medicine

18 min read | Read 9 times

UWA medical school is the University of Western Australia's route into the Doctor of Medicine (MD). This page explains the school, the MD itself, and UWA medicine undergraduate entry for school leavers, then the graduate route into the same degree.

Domestic applicants use one of two doors. School leavers compete for an assured pathway on ATAR (or equivalent), UCAT ® ANZ, and an interview, then complete a set bachelor's degree at UWA before the MD. Graduates compete on selection GPA, GAMSAT ®, and an interview. Both paths lead to the same accredited MD in Perth. Other Australian medical schools are listed in the Australian medical schools directory. For a national ranking of medical degrees, see MD ranking . Perth's direct-entry MBBS is Curtin Medicine .

UWA publishes the current minima, place rules, and timetable on its Doctor of Medicine course page. Fees, the interview calendar for a given year, and the competitive line inside each quota move with the intake. Use that page, the handbook, and the admissions policy for the cycle you are applying in. Source: UWA Doctor of Medicine.

The UWA medical school

The UWA medical school teaches the Doctor of Medicine in Perth. The course is based at the Crawley campus, with clinical teaching facilities at the Queen Elizabeth II Medical Centre. UWA describes the school as Western Australia's first established medical school. Source: UWA Doctor of Medicine.

The MD (course code 91850, CRICOS 089788A) is a professional practice master's administered by the Medical School and accredited by the Australian Medical Council. Teaching is full-time, with one intake at the beginning of the year. Source: UWA Doctor of Medicine handbook.

There are 206 domestic places and 40 international places. Up to half are filled from school-leaver entry and the rest from graduate entry. Within the domestic quota, up to 10% of places are for Indigenous students and 30% are for rural students. Twenty school-leaver places are for Broadway schools. Bonded Medical Places are 28.5% of domestic places. Source: UWA Doctor of Medicine.

Domestic places are Commonwealth supported, and eligible students can use HECS-HELP. Contributions are charged by unit and indexed each year. Full-fee places are charged as an annual course fee. Current amounts are on the fee calculator linked from the course page. Fee comparisons across schools sit in the Australian medical schools directory. The Doctor of Medicine at UWA

The Doctor of Medicine at UWA is a four-year full-time professional degree. The curriculum uses six roles UWA calls PLACES: professional, leader, advocate, clinician, educator, and scholar. Each year is about 40 weeks. Source: UWA Doctor of Medicine handbook.

Year 1 is preparatory science and clinical skills. Students who have not completed the Integrated Medical Sciences and Clinical Practice major take up to 48 points of conversion units in that year. Clinical placements then run through Perth hospitals and general practice. In Year 3, 25% of the cohort spend the year at the Rural Clinical School, from Esperance to Kununurra, on the same curriculum. Year 4 includes an elective, which can be taken overseas, and a preparation-for-internship block. Source: UWA Doctor of Medicine handbook and UWA Doctor of Medicine.

In Years 3 and 4 every student also completes a scholarly activity in research, community service learning, or coursework in public health or health professions education. Rural health and Aboriginal health are options inside that program. Each student has a clinician mentor for the degree. Source: UWA Doctor of Medicine.

Graduates can apply for provisional registration in Australia and New Zealand, then an internship. Full registration follows a completed internship and the registration authority's requirements. UWA's admissions guide says Australian registration requires a 12-month pre-registration internship in an approved clinical setting. The path after the degree is covered in how to become a doctor in Australia . Source: UWA Doctor of Medicine handbook and UWA 2026 domestic health admissions guide.

The handbook sets a 10-year limit on finishing the MD once you have started it. That limit is separate from the age of the bachelor's degree you use to apply. Students enrol full-time unless the School permits otherwise, supply a current National Police Certificate at admission, and show first-aid competence equivalent to HLTAID003, valid for no more than three years at enrolment. UWA medicine undergraduate entry

UWA medicine undergraduate entry is an assured pathway for domestic school leavers. You apply through the Tertiary Institutions Service Centre (TISC) for the Doctor of Medicine via the Bachelor of Biomedicine (Specialised). The application opens on the TISC timeline and closes late September. A successful applicant receives a conditional place in the MD. The medicine assured pathway is TISC code UG056, and the paired course codes are BP056 and 91850. Source: UWA Doctor of Medicine and UWA assured pathways.

Domestic applicants are Australian citizens, including dual citizens, permanent residents, and New Zealand citizens. A school-leaver applicant is completing Year 12 (ATAR or equivalent) or is on a gap year, including national service straight after school, and has not started a university degree or vocational study at diploma level or above. Someone who has already started that study applies later, once they hold a bachelor's degree, through graduate entry. Source: UWA Doctor of Medicine.

Selection uses ATAR or equivalent, UCAT ® ANZ, and an interview. The published ATAR minimum is 98 for the Rural, Broadway, and High Academic Achiever quotas. An International Baccalaureate score of 40 is the equivalent UWA lists for an ATAR of 98. The Indigenous school-leaver minimum is an ATAR of 90. Meeting the minimum makes you eligible. UWA states that entry is competitive and that the minimum ATAR does not by itself secure a place. Education Access Scheme and UWay adjustments count for every quota. For Broadway and Rural, the ATAR minimum is applied after Broadway adjustments. A small number of places are available to domestic school leavers who completed Year 12 outside Western Australia and have reached the minimum ATAR. Source: UWA Doctor of Medicine and UWA assured pathways.

High Academic Achiever, Broadway, and Rural applicants sit UCAT ® ANZ in the year they apply. The score is the sum of the cognitive subtests. Situational Judgement is reported separately and is not currently part of that total; UWA reserves the right to use it. The score cannot be carried over from an earlier year. Put the UCAT ® ANZ ID on the TISC application. UWA invites people to interview from UCAT ® ANZ performance inside each quota. There is no published minimum UCAT ® score. How the test is used across Australian medicine is covered in UCAT ® for medicine . Source: UWA Doctor of Medicine.

Final ranking for a standard domestic school-leaver offer is ATAR or equivalent 30%, interview 50%, and UCAT ® ANZ 20%. Rural offers use ATAR 22.5%, interview 37.5%, UCAT ® ANZ 15%, and a rurality rating 25%. Interview invitations are planned for after WACE exams. UWA publishes the interview dates for the current year on the course page, and those dates can change. Offers follow the TISC timeline. A school-leaver offer can be deferred for one year. Australian permanent residents and dual citizens with a national service obligation can defer for up to two years. Source: UWA Doctor of Medicine.

The assured pathway lists two subject prerequisites: Chemistry ATAR, or a bridging unit, and Mathematics Applications ATAR or a higher mathematics subject, or a bridging unit. UWA also says these subjects can be taken as Level 1 university units during the bachelor's degree. School leavers meet UWA's English language requirements for undergraduate entry. Source: UWA assured pathways and UWA Doctor of Medicine.

The bachelor's degree before the MD

The conditional MD place depends on UWA's Bachelor of Biomedicine (Specialised) with the Integrated Medical Sciences and Clinical Practice major. The admissions policy requires a selection GPA of at least 5.5 at the end of year 2 (96 points) and a pass in every unit in year 3 (144 points). That major is credited as one year of the MD, so the bachelor's degree and the MD together take six years of full-time study. UWA's assured-pathway table lists the same pairing as 3 + 3 years. Students who have completed the major are granted up to 48 points of credit for the MD conversion units. Source: UWA Doctor of Medicine, UWA Admissions (Coursework) Policy, and UWA Doctor of Medicine handbook.

International school leavers apply to UWA, or through an authorised agent. They need an ATAR of 98 or equivalent, an ISAT result at or above the 25th percentile in both Critical Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning, and an interview. The offer rank is ATAR 30%, interview 50%, and ISAT 20%. UWA publishes the ISAT sittings and application window for the current intake on the course page. Source: UWA Doctor of Medicine.

Graduate entry into the MD

Graduate entry is for applicants who have completed a recognised bachelor's degree, or who are in the final year of their first bachelor's degree. Domestic applications, including rural applicants, go through GEMSAS and follow the GEMSAS opening and closing dates. A valid GAMSAT ® score has to be in by the closing date. If you hold more than one valid score, you may use your best score. National graduate-entry rules across schools are compared in medical school entry requirements . Source: UWA Doctor of Medicine.

To be considered you need a bachelor's degree UWA recognises, a selection GPA of at least 5.5, and a GAMSAT ® overall score of at least 55 with no section under 50. A higher degree without a bachelor's degree is not accepted as the qualifying qualification. There is no preferred degree and no subject prerequisite. UWA recommends Year 12 physics, first-year chemistry (with Year 12 chemistry behind it), and first-year biology or human biology, as preparation for the degree and for the GAMSAT ®. How the overall GAMSAT ® result is built is explained in GAMSAT ® scores . Source: UWA Doctor of Medicine.

GAMSAT ® results are valid for four years at the application closing date. The course page lists the earliest and latest sittings that count for each commencement year. International graduate applicants may submit a GAMSAT ® result on the same 55 / 50 minimum, or an MCAT of at least 500 with no section under 124. They apply through UWA's online system or an authorised agent. Source: UWA Doctor of Medicine.

Shortlisting for interview uses GPA 60% and GAMSAT ® or MCAT 40%. After the interview, a non-rural domestic offer is ranked on GAMSAT ® 20%, GPA 30%, and interview 50%. A rural offer uses GAMSAT ® 15%, GPA 22.5%, interview 37.5%, and rurality 25%. International graduate offers use the same 20% / 30% / 50% split as non-rural domestic offers. Indigenous-entry offers are ranked on GPA and an interview with the Centre for Aboriginal Medical and Dental Health. Source: UWA Doctor of Medicine.

UWA plans domestic graduate interviews for around late September or early October, with offers from November on the GEMSAS timeline. The MD starts in January. An MD offer cannot be deferred, so apply in a cycle when you can start. A final-year offer still requires the bachelor's degree to be finished by 31 December of the year before commencement, with a selection GPA of at least 5.5 for semester two of that final year. A delay past that date withdraws the offer. Source: UWA Doctor of Medicine.

Graduate applicants show English language competence with at least two successful full-time-equivalent years of degree study in Australia, Canada (excluding Quebec), Ireland, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, or the United States. Applicants outside that path need IELTS Academic with an overall score of at least 7.0 and no band under 7.0. The handbook states the same IELTS minimum. Source: UWA Doctor of Medicine and UWA Doctor of Medicine handbook.

How the selection GPA is calculated

UWA calculates the selection GPA on a 7.0 scale from the most recent three full-time-equivalent years, counting back from semester one of the application year. Those three years are weighted equally, and at least one full-time-equivalent year of graded results is required. UWA does not scale for university or field. It uses the transcript as it stands, so the figure can differ from a basic GEMSAS calculation. Ungraded passes count in the study load and are left out of the average. Fails inside the three-year window are included. Source: UWA Doctor of Medicine.

A bachelor's degree older than ten years is still considered when the other minima are met. A completed PhD is awarded a selection GPA of 7.0. A completed master's by research adds 0.2, provided it is finished by the end of semester one of the application year. A completed UWA Doctor of Dental Medicine is awarded a selection GPA of 7.0 for an application to the MD. Source: UWA Doctor of Medicine.

Places, quotas, and the cut-off

UWA publishes minimum scores that let an application be considered. The score that wins an interview or a place is the rank inside that year's quota. For school leavers, UWA sets the UCAT ® ANZ threshold by ranking within each quota and does not publish earlier minima, because those minima do not predict the next intake. For graduates, 5.5 and 55 are hurdles. The interview list is the top of the combined GPA and GAMSAT ® rank, and that line moves with the cohort. Read a UCAT ® result against national score reporting in UCAT ® scores, then use UWA's course page for the quota you are in. Source: UWA Doctor of Medicine.

Rural eligibility is the same idea for school leavers and graduates. Your principal home address needs to have been in a Modified Monash Model 2023 area of MM2 to MM7 for five consecutive years, or for ten years in total. School leavers submit UWA's rural eligibility form with the TISC application by the medicine closing date. Graduate applicants indicate rural eligibility in the GEMSAS application. Check a location with the Department of Health locator. Source: UWA Doctor of Medicine and Health Workforce Locator.

Broadway is a school-leaver quota. You qualify if you completed all of Year 12, including WACE, at a UWA Broadway school. TISC identifies eligible applicants and applies any Broadway adjustment before the ATAR minimum. The current school list is on UWA's Broadway page. Source: UWA Doctor of Medicine and Broadway UWA.

Indigenous school leavers can start with the School of Indigenous Studies. Indigenous graduates can start with Boola Boola Djinda or the Centre for Aboriginal Medical and Dental Health. The domestic health guide says graduate Indigenous entry to medicine includes an interview with that Centre and the School of Indigenous Studies, and that applicants provide a person or organisation who can confirm Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander status. Source: UWA Doctor of Medicine and UWA 2026 domestic health admissions guide.

A bonded place is a domestic place with a return-of-service commitment set by the Australian Government, aimed at communities with a workforce shortage. School leavers do not enter a separate TISC preference for a bonded place. Graduate applicants can indicate interest in the GEMSAS application. UWA allocates bonded places from the ranked lists. The admissions policy says that, on the assured pathway, bonded places go to lower-ranked applicants in the High Academic Achiever, Broadway, and Rural quotas. The interview and where you apply

Domestic school leavers and domestic graduates who are shortlisted sit a multiple mini interview. Registration included, the process takes about 70 to 75 minutes. There are eight stations. Each station is seven minutes: two minutes to read the question and five minutes with the interviewer. International school leavers and international graduates sit a panel of two interviewers, about 50 minutes including registration, built around five MMI-style questions with an overall time limit. Station practice for this format is in the multiple mini interview guide . Source: UWA Doctor of Medicine.

The interview assesses qualities UWA wants in a doctor, including ethical judgement, communication, teamwork, empathy, and resilience. Questions are written, change from year to year, and have no single correct answer. UWA does not endorse commercial coaching, and it does not release the questions to course providers. A school-leaver offer into the assured pathway can be deferred for one year. Australian permanent residents and dual citizens with a national service obligation can defer for up to two years. An offer of a place in the MD itself cannot be deferred, and the handbook does not allow approved leave in the first academic year of the MD. Graduate applicants who need a later start submit a new application for that later intake. Source: UWA Doctor of Medicine and UWA Doctor of Medicine handbook.

UWA medical school questions

Is UWA medicine undergraduate or graduate?

Both, into one Doctor of Medicine. School leavers apply for an assured pathway through TISC, then complete the Bachelor of Biomedicine (Specialised) before the MD. Graduates apply through GEMSAS with a bachelor's degree, a selection GPA, and GAMSAT. Up to half of the 206 domestic places are school-leaver places, and the rest are graduate places.

What ATAR do you need for UWA medicine undergraduate entry?

The published minimum is an ATAR of 98, or an IB of 40, for the High Academic Achiever, Broadway, and Rural quotas. The Indigenous school-leaver minimum is an ATAR of 90. The minimum is an eligibility line. Offers are ranked on ATAR, UCAT ANZ, and an interview, and the minimum ATAR does not guarantee a place.

Does the Doctor of Medicine at UWA need the GAMSAT?

Domestic graduate applicants need a GAMSAT overall score of at least 55, with no section under 50. The result is valid for four years at the closing date. School leavers on the assured pathway sit UCAT ANZ instead, and do not sit the GAMSAT to take up the conditional MD place. International graduates may submit GAMSAT or an MCAT of at least 500 with no section under 124.

What UCAT score does UWA want?

UWA does not publish a minimum UCAT ANZ score. High Academic Achiever, Broadway, and Rural school leavers sit the test in the year they apply, and interview invitations are ranked on that score inside each quota. UWA uses the cognitive total. Situational Judgement is separate and is not currently in that total. The score cannot be reused from an earlier year. In the final rank, UCAT ANZ is 20% for a standard offer and 15% for a rural offer.

How long is the UWA Doctor of Medicine?

The MD is four years full-time for students who enter it directly. Assured-pathway students complete a three-year Bachelor of Biomedicine (Specialised). The Integrated Medical Sciences and Clinical Practice major is one year of credit toward the MD, so the two degrees take six years. UWA lists that pairing as 3 + 3 years.

Can you defer a UWA medicine offer?

A school-leaver offer for the assured pathway can be deferred for one year. Australian permanent residents and dual citizens with a national service obligation can defer for up to two years. An offer into the MD cannot be deferred. Graduate applicants who cannot start in January apply again in a later GEMSAS cycle.

What is the UWA medicine cut-off?

The published floors are an ATAR of 98 (90 for Indigenous school leavers), a selection GPA of 5.5, and a GAMSAT overall score of 55 with no section under 50. There is no published UCAT cut-off. The competitive line is the rank inside that year's quota, and UWA does not publish previous UCAT minima as a guide for the next intake. Check the current course page for the quota you are applying to.
