Griffith University medicine is the Doctor of Medicine. School leavers reach it through a provisional bachelor degree. Graduates reach it through the Graduate Entry Medical School Admissions System (GEMSAS). This page explains the degree, Griffith med undergrad, and Griffith University medicine entry requirements, including who should sit the GAMSAT ®, who should sit the UCAT ® ANZ, and how offers are ranked.
The two routes lead to the same MD and use different applications.

The Doctor of Medicine at Griffith
The Doctor of Medicine at Griffith is a four-year graduate-entry degree, program 5099, and an Australian Qualifications Framework level 9 extended masters. Sources: Pathways to Medicine, Griffith University and Griffith University, GEMSAS.
Griffith states that it was the first Australian medical school to meet the new national medical program accreditation standards. Source: Pathways to Medicine, Griffith University. Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, and Toowoomba
Domestic graduate applicants are placed at the Gold Coast campus or at the Sunshine Coast Health Institute. The Gold Coast campus is at Parklands Drive, Southport. The Sunshine Coast teaching location is at 6 Doherty Street, Birtinya, inside the Sunshine Coast University Hospital precinct. You rank those two locations, and you rank a non-bonded Commonwealth Supported Place and a bonded place. Preferences are considered. Quotas decide the result. Sources: Griffith University, GEMSAS and Doctor of Medicine next steps, Griffith University.
In the current GEMSAS school entry, the intake table lists 148 Commonwealth Supported Places, 60 bonded places, and up to 35 international places. Eighty Bachelor of Medical Science pathway places sit inside the CSP and bonded totals, and that pathway share includes 28.5% bonded places. Griffith describes 208 domestic places, with about 80 reserved for graduates of the Griffith and University of the Sunshine Coast medical science degrees. Sources: Griffith University, GEMSAS and Pathways to Medicine, Griffith University. The next GEMSAS guide replaces that table.
GEMSAS also describes 10 new non-bonded Commonwealth Supported Places for an end-to-end rural stream at Toowoomba, with subsidised accommodation across the four years. Teaching is at Griffith's Rural Clinical School, in partnership with Rural Medical Education Australia, at 190 Hume Street, East Toowoomba. Students who accept a Gold Coast or Sunshine Coast offer can later be invited to be considered for Toowoomba. Further GEMSAS offers can fill any places still open. The Toowoomba option is for GEMSAS applicants. Sources: Griffith University, GEMSAS and Doctor of Medicine next steps, Griffith University. Read the current school entry before you treat 10 as a permanent quota.
A bonded place is a Commonwealth Supported Place with a return-of-service commitment. The Department of Health sets that commitment at 156 weeks, completed within 18 years of finishing the medical course. Source: About the Bonded Medical Program, Department of Health, Disability and Ageing.

How the four years are organised
The opening phase builds core medical knowledge through team-based learning, interprofessional work, First Peoples Health modules, and early patient contact in the Longitudinal General Practice and Rural Programs. Griffith describes this as the first year and a half. The later years are clinical immersion: community placements, core rotations, capstones, and further training in leadership, research, and communication. The curriculum emphasises general practice, primary care, and rural and remote care. Source: Pathways to Medicine, Griffith University.
Before placement, students provide vaccination records, complete a nationally accredited first aid and CPR course, hold a National Police Check, and hold a Queensland Blue Card. Source: Griffith University, GEMSAS. Griffith also publishes a concurrent Doctor of Medicine and PhD enrolment pattern for students who want research training alongside the degree. School-leaver entry (Griffith med undergrad)
Griffith med undergrad is provisional entry. A high-achieving school leaver completes a Bachelor of Medical Science and then moves into the MD if the GPA hurdle is met. It is the school-leaver route into Griffith's medicine program. Domestic applications go through the Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre (QTAC). Source: Pathways to Medicine, Griffith University.
You are in the eligible group if you are in Year 12, or you finished Year 12 within the past year, and you have not started tertiary study at diploma level or higher. QTAC names the exact school-year cohorts on the current course listing. Sources: Pathways to Medicine, Griffith University and Bachelor of Medical Science, Gold Coast (233422), QTAC.
ATAR is the primary selection method. The threshold moves with the applicant pool and can differ by campus. Griffith's own guide for 2023 to 2025 puts the minimum ATAR that received an offer between 99.80 and 99.90. The latest campus figure, including any UCAT ® ANZ total used inside an ATAR band, is on Griffith's pathways page. Source: Pathways to Medicine, Griffith University.
Applicants can receive up to 0.25 in adjustment factors for location, rurality, the Educational Access Scheme, and the Elite Athlete Support Policy. Eligible rural school leavers whom QTAC assesses as rural receive a 0.05 adjustment. Source: Pathways to Medicine, Griffith University. Griffith's Guaranteed Admission Schemes do not apply to this program. Source: Bachelor of Medical Science, Gold Coast (233422), QTAC.
QTAC lists the subjects as assumed knowledge at Units 3 and 4, grade C: English, English as an Additional Language, Literature, or English and Literature Extension; Mathematical Methods; and one of Biology, Chemistry, or Physics. Griffith states that assumed knowledge is not assessable. Sources: Bachelor of Medical Science, Gold Coast (233422), QTAC and Pathways to Medicine, Griffith University.
The UCAT ® ANZ is optional, and Griffith recommends it. ATAR still comes first. If applicants in the same ATAR band need to be separated, Griffith uses the UCAT ® ANZ total score. Applicants without a result stay in the pool and are ranked at the bottom of that band. Source: Pathways to Medicine, Griffith University. How the total is built, and how universities use it, is covered in UCAT ® scores and UCAT ® for medicine.

Gold Coast and Nathan
Griffith's Bachelor of Medical Science is a two-year degree taught over five consecutive trimesters. There are 30 places at the Gold Coast and 30 places at Brisbane South (Nathan). Sources: Pathways to Medicine, Griffith University and Bachelor of Medical Science, Gold Coast (233422), QTAC. A GPA of 5.5 or higher gives guaranteed admission into the MD at the Gold Coast campus. Source: Pathways to Medicine, Griffith University.
Domestic applicants use QTAC. The current codes are 233422 for the Gold Coast and 228272 for Nathan. Confirm both codes on QTAC before you lodge. International applicants for this bachelor apply to Griffith, or through a Griffith-registered agent. Sources: Bachelor of Medical Science, Gold Coast (233422), QTAC, Bachelor of Medical Science, Nathan (228272), QTAC, and Pathways to Medicine, Griffith University.
Year 12 students who want the First Peoples Health Pathway apply through QTAC and preference an eligible health program by the September date on the QTAC listing. QTAC currently states 30 September. Source: Bachelor of Medical Science, Gold Coast (233422), QTAC.
The Sunshine Coast route
The University of the Sunshine Coast offers its own Bachelor of Medical Science, program SC385, at the Sunshine Coast. It is three years, full-time, domestic only, and capped at 20 places a year. QTAC code 013231. Completion with a GPA of 5.5 or better leads to direct entry into Griffith's MD at Sunshine Coast University Hospital. Sources: Bachelor of Medical Science, University of the Sunshine Coast and Pathways to Medicine, Griffith University.
UniSC also ranks first by academic merit and uses the UCAT ® ANZ total, when the applicant has one, inside an ATAR band. Applicants without a UCAT ® ANZ result are ranked at the bottom of their band. Adjustment factors do not apply. Recommended prior study is English at Units 3 and 4, grade C. A limited number of places can be set aside for rural applicants, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants, and applicants who live locally. UniSC publishes the current thresholds for those schemes on the course page. Source: Bachelor of Medical Science, University of the Sunshine Coast.
From Year 12, the Griffith bachelor plus the MD is six years. The Sunshine Coast bachelor plus the MD is seven years. A graduate who already holds a degree applies for the four-year MD itself.
Griffith University medicine entry requirements
Griffith University medicine entry requirements depend on the route. School leavers are ranked on ATAR, with the UCAT ® ANZ total used inside a band. Graduate applicants need a key degree, a competitive unweighted GPA, a GAMSAT ® result, and, if invited, a GUMSAA interview. Griffith uses those same requirements for graduates of every university, including Griffith. Source: Pathways to Medicine, Griffith University.
The graduate degree, GPA, and GAMSAT ®
Graduate entry accepts a completed bachelor, or a bachelor in its final year, in any discipline. Honours, a masters (coursework, research, or mixed), and a PhD can also be the key degree. Griffith names the Bachelor of Biomedical Science, Bachelor of Health Science, Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science, and Bachelor of Pharmacy as useful preparation. Selection still runs on results. Source: Pathways to Medicine, Griffith University.
The minimum GPA is 5.0 out of 7.0. Griffith calculates an unweighted GPA with the GEMSAS grading scheme, over the final three full-time-equivalent years. Final-year applicants are scored on the grades available so far. An offer is then conditional on finishing the degree by the December deadline in that year's GEMSAS entry, and on staying at or above a GPA of 5.0. In any one GPA year, ungraded passes up to 0.5 full-time equivalent are disregarded. Ungraded passes above that are included at a grade value of 4.5. A completed PhD receives a GPA of 7.0. Source: Griffith University, GEMSAS. Other graduate schools weight the GPA differently. That comparison lives on medical school entry requirements.
The key degree needs to have been completed within 10 years of the MD start date. An older degree can still be used if, by 31 July in the year of application, you have passed the equivalent of one full-time year of tertiary study within those 10 years. Every applicant also needs at least one full-time year of actual study at diploma level or higher inside that 10-year window. Credit from work experience and other informal learning does not count toward that year. Diplomas, postgraduate diplomas, graduate certificates, and graduate diplomas are not themselves a key degree. Credit from those awards can count when it forms part of a completed masters. Postgraduate key degrees need to be finished by 31 July in the year of application. Source: Griffith University, GEMSAS.
For the 2027 intake, Griffith still lets an applicant ask for every Semester or Trimester 1 grade from 2020 to be disregarded. The request covers the whole study period, and the deadline is in the current GEMSAS school entry. Source: Griffith University, GEMSAS.
GAMSAT ® eligibility is a minimum of 50 in each section and an overall score of at least 50. Ranking uses the overall score. Because the interview rank is half GPA and half GAMSAT ®, a stronger result on one can balance a lower result on the other, and the GPA that wins an interview is likely to sit well above 5.0. Griffith publishes recent interview-selection medians on its pathways page. Read those for the latest intake. Sources: Griffith University, GEMSAS and Pathways to Medicine, Griffith University. What the exam covers is explained in what the GAMSAT ® is. GEMSAS treats a GAMSAT ® result as valid for four years. Source: GAMSAT, GEMSAS.
Domestic graduate applications go through GEMSAS. You can list up to six medical schools. For Griffith, you also choose a campus preference, or no preference, and the place types you want. Source: Pathways to Medicine, Griffith University. International MD applicants apply to Griffith, or through a registered agent, and show English language proficiency plus a GAMSAT ® result from the past four years or an MCAT result from the past two years. Places are limited. An international offer cannot be deferred, and it cannot be moved to another campus. Source: Pathways to Medicine, Griffith University.
English language requirements apply to international applicants and to applicants whose previous study was not taught and assessed in English in a recognised country. One accepted result is IELTS Academic with 7.0 overall, 7.0 in listening, reading, and speaking, and 6.5 in writing. GEMSAS also lists OET, TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, and Cambridge, and test results need to be no more than two years old. Source: Griffith University, GEMSAS.
How Griffith ranks graduate applicants
GUMSAA is Griffith's graduate interview. It is held online each September. Applicants answer scenario questions on communication, empathy and ethics, reflection, problem-solving, teamwork, and decision-making. Questions are not released beforehand. The rank comes from the interview performance. Invitations use a 50:50 combination of the unweighted GPA, converted to a percentage, and the overall GAMSAT ® score. Offers then use a 50:50 combination of that interview-selection rank and the interview score. In practice the offer is half interview, a quarter GPA, and a quarter GAMSAT ®. Sources: Pathways to Medicine, Griffith University and Griffith University, GEMSAS.
GEMSAS runs GUMSAA on the SAMMI online system. Selected applicants book a time in the published window, and Griffith provides a chance to practise the recording. The main offer round is early November, with later rounds if places remain. The offer letter states the place type and the campus. Source: Griffith University, GEMSAS. For how multi-station interviews are structured across Australian schools, use the guide to MMIs.
Rural applicants and First Peoples pathways
The Griffith University Rural Priority Access Scheme (GURPAS) reserves Commonwealth Supported Places for eligible rural students in the MD. Eligibility is five consecutive years, or 10 years in total, in an area classified MM2 to MM7 on the 2019 Modified Monash Model. Check the classification with the Health Workforce Locator, using the Modified Monash Model (2019) filter. Sources: Pathways to Medicine, Griffith University and Health Workforce Locator.
For the MD, the First Peoples Pathway to Medicine uses a GPA of 5.0 or higher, a separate panel interview, and no GAMSAT ® and no GUMSAA. Apply through GEMSAS, include Griffith as a preference, and contact Griffith with your application number. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander status is confirmed with the documentation Griffith and GEMSAS describe, commonly a Confirmation of Aboriginality. The Doctor of Medicine First Peoples Scholarship is $20,000 over the four years of the degree. Sources: Pathways to Medicine, Griffith University and Griffith University, GEMSAS. The Year 12 First Peoples Health Pathway is the school-leaver route described above.
Dates, fees, and this year's cut-offs
Closing dates, student contributions, and the rank that received an offer are published for each intake. Griffith's graduate cycle still has a stable shape: GAMSAT ® registration and the sitting from November to March, the GEMSAS application from April to May, GUMSAA in September, and MD offers from October to November. Source: Pathways to Medicine, Griffith University. The exact close, the September interview days, and the offer day are in that year's GEMSAS guide and on the Australian Council for Educational Research GAMSAT ® site. GAMSAT ® preparation is the place to start once you know which sitting you need.
School-leaver applications follow QTAC. Each listing has a fixed closing date, a January offer round, and the UCAT ® ANZ registration window for applicants who sit the test. QTAC requires enrolment in a class by the response time in the offer email. A missed deadline lapses the offer. Source: Bachelor of Medical Science, Gold Coast (233422), QTAC. Confirm the current UCAT ® ANZ dates on the UCAT ® ANZ website, and use UCAT ® preparation if you are sitting it for this route. UniSC publishes its own QTAC close on the Bachelor of Medical Science page. Source: Bachelor of Medical Science, University of the Sunshine Coast.
Orientation for the MD is compulsory and falls in mid-January. Griffith publishes a separate medicine academic calendar for each cohort, because clinical years start earlier than a standard university trimester. Source: Griffith University, GEMSAS. Domestic deferral of the MD is limited to one year, and only for documented exceptional circumstances that could not have been foreseen at application. The request is in writing to the Dean of Medicine. An offer is for that intake. An applicant who does not take it up reapplies. Source: Griffith University, GEMSAS.
Fees change by year and by place type. Domestic CSP and bonded students pay a student contribution, which Study Assist publishes and which can differ from the indicative first-year figure on a QTAC or UniSC listing. International tuition is set by Griffith. Sources: Student contribution amounts, Study Assist and Bachelor of Medical Science, Gold Coast (233422), QTAC. Place types across Australian schools, including bonded places, are compared on the Australian medical schools page. For the dollar amount that applies to you, use Griffith's fees and charges information and the current course listing.
The competitive cut-off is the same kind of moving figure. Griffith's pathways page is where the latest ATAR thresholds and the latest GUMSAA selection medians are published. Treat a previous intake as a guide, and read the page for the year you are applying.
Griffith University medicine questions
Is Griffith University medicine undergraduate or graduate?
Both routes lead to the same four-year Doctor of Medicine. School leavers complete a Bachelor of Medical Science first, over two years at Griffith or three years at the University of the Sunshine Coast, and then enter the MD if they meet the GPA hurdle. Graduates apply for the MD itself through GEMSAS after a prior degree.
Does the Doctor of Medicine at Griffith require the GAMSAT?
Graduate applicants need a GAMSAT result of at least 50 in each section and 50 overall, unless they are applying through the First Peoples Pathway to Medicine. Students who progress from the Griffith or University of the Sunshine Coast Bachelor of Medical Science with the required GPA are admitted without the GAMSAT and without GUMSAA.
Do you need the UCAT for Griffith med undergrad?
The ATAR is the primary rank for the Griffith and University of the Sunshine Coast medical science degrees. The UCAT ANZ total is used to order applicants inside an ATAR band. You can be considered without a UCAT ANZ result, and you are then ranked at the bottom of your band. Griffith recommends sitting the test.
What GPA do you need for Griffith medicine?
Graduate eligibility starts at an unweighted GPA of 5.0. Interview selection combines that GPA with the overall GAMSAT score, so the GPA that receives an interview is likely to be higher, and Griffith publishes recent medians on its pathways page. A completed PhD is given a GPA of 7.0. School leavers need a GPA of 5.5 in the medical science degree to progress into the MD.
Where is the Griffith MD taught?
Graduate places are at the Gold Coast campus or the Sunshine Coast Health Institute at Birtinya. A small Toowoomba rural stream can be offered later to GEMSAS applicants who have accepted one of those places. Griffith medical science graduates go to the Gold Coast MD. University of the Sunshine Coast medical science graduates go to the Sunshine Coast MD.
What is the GUMSAA?
The Griffith University Multi Station Admissions Assessment is the online graduate interview, held each September. Invitations are half unweighted GPA and half overall GAMSAT. Offers are half that selection rank and half the interview score. School-leaver applicants who meet the medical science GPA hurdle do not sit it.
Where do I check this year's dates, fees, and cut-offs?
Use Griffith's pathways page for the latest ATAR guide and GUMSAA medians, the GEMSAS Griffith entry for the current place table, interview window, and closing rules, the QTAC listings for school-leaver codes and offer rounds, and the University of the Sunshine Coast course page for that bachelor. Student contribution amounts are on Study Assist, and international tuition is on Griffith's fees information.
