Melbourne medical university is the way applicants search for medicine at the University of Melbourne. The degree is the Doctor of Medicine (MD), run by the Melbourne Medical School. It is a four-year full-time graduate program, taught on campus at Parkville, with a January intake (University of Melbourne, Doctor of Medicine).
This page is that medicine program. It covers the MD, the undergraduate degree that comes first, standard entry, guaranteed entry at UniMelb, and the search phrase Rise Advanced. Dental degrees at the same university are a separate admissions path. Fees, closing dates, and the score that earns an interview change by intake. Use the university course pages and the current GEMSAS school entry for those figures.

The Doctor of Medicine at UniMelb
UniMelb medicine is the four-year Doctor of Medicine. The Australian Medical Council lists the University of Melbourne's Doctor of Medicine as an accredited primary medical program, with accreditation shown through 31 March 2027 (Australian Medical Council, accredited medical schools). Graduates are eligible to apply for registration with the Medical Board of Australia (University of Melbourne, Doctor of Medicine). Registration, internship, and the years after the degree sit on how to become a doctor in Australia.
The university describes the course as one year of integrated bioscience and clinical learning, two core clinical training years, Discovery subjects, an optional immersive research experience, a capstone semester for the skills of safe practice, and an annual medical conference (University of Melbourne, Doctor of Medicine course structure). In second year, students choose either the Research Scholar pathway or the Clinical Scholar pathway, with course advisers supporting that choice. Discovery runs across the four years, from a foundation subject through to a final research-scholar or clinical-scholar subject (University of Melbourne, Doctor of Medicine course structure).
The Melbourne MD also sits in the Australian medical schools directory, which is the short national list. This page is the Melbourne program itself. How the Melbourne MD is compared with other Australian medical degrees is covered in MD ranking.
Clinical schools for the later years
Applicants invited to the multi-mini interview are asked for a clinical school region preference. Accepting a place accepts a clinical school region, and then a primary clinical school. During first year, students are allocated to a clinical school for the final three years. Students at a Rural Clinical School who are not on the Rural Pathway may be able to be reallocated after Year 2 (Melbourne Medical School, clinical schools).
Metropolitan clinical schools are Austin, Epworth, Northern, Royal Melbourne, St Vincent's, and Western. Rural clinical schools are at Ballarat, Shepparton, Echuca, and Wangaratta. Shepparton is the home of the Doctor of Medicine Rural Pathway (Melbourne Medical School, clinical school regions).
University of Melbourne medicine undergraduate
University of Melbourne medicine undergraduate study is the bachelor degree before the MD. The university's own pathway is three years of a bachelor degree, then four years of the Doctor of Medicine (University of Melbourne, how to become a doctor). There is no school-leaver medicine degree on that pathway.
For standard MD entry, the bachelor can be in any discipline. It must be completed within 10 years of the 1 January on which you would start the MD. If the bachelor is older than that, a graduate diploma, master's, or PhD completed inside those 10 years can refresh eligibility (University of Melbourne Handbook, Doctor of Medicine entry requirements). The bachelor does not have to be from Melbourne, and it does not have to be biomedicine.
The university's school-leaver illustration of the same path names its own undergraduate courses: Bachelor of Agriculture, Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Biomedicine, Bachelor of Science, and Bachelor of Science (Extended) (University of Melbourne, how to become a doctor). Biomedicine is one of those bachelor degrees. It is not the medical degree, and the ATAR for getting into that bachelor is published on the undergraduate course page.
Choosing an undergraduate medical degree at another university, rather than a graduate MD, is the national pathway question on how to become a doctor in Australia. Standard applicants to this MD sit the GAMSAT ®. The UCAT ® is the admissions test used by undergraduate medicine programs. Which exam belongs to which route is set out in UCAT ® versus the GAMSAT ®.
Melbourne medical university entry requirements
University of Melbourne medicine entry requirements depend on which published pathway you use. The standard pathway is the graduate route: a recent enough bachelor degree, the GAMSAT ®, and a multi-mini interview if you are shortlisted. Meeting the published minima does not guarantee a place (University of Melbourne, Doctor of Medicine entry requirements).
Domestic standard-pathway applications go through GEMSAS. You are considered only for the fee types you select. Offers are made in the order Commonwealth Supported Place, then Bonded Medical Place, then full-fee (GEMSAS, University of Melbourne). The current number of places in each type is on that GEMSAS page and can change. International applicants apply to the university, and use the GAMSAT ®. An MCAT score is accepted only for international applicants who are outside Australia when they apply, and GEMSAS publishes a minimum MCAT total for that group (GEMSAS, University of Melbourne).
How GEMSAS schools weight scores against each other, and how to build a preference list, stays on graduate entry medicine requirements. What a GAMSAT ® result means sits on GAMSAT ® scores.
GPA, the GAMSAT, and the interview
The published hurdles for the standard pathway are a minimum GPA of 5 and a minimum of 50 in each of the three GAMSAT ® sections. GEMSAS describes both as minimums, with selection above that line competitive (GEMSAS, University of Melbourne). The score that actually receives an interview is a separate cutoff. The university does not lock that cutoff to one public number. Check the current guide rather than an old forum figure.
Except for guaranteed entry, GPA uses the most recent bachelor degree, including honours only when that honours year is finished by the end of June in the application year and the results are available in time. The last three years of undergraduate coursework are weighted 1, then 2, then 2. Later graduate coursework does not replace the bachelor in that calculation (University of Melbourne Handbook, Doctor of Medicine entry requirements). Each GAMSAT ® section is weighted equally (GEMSAS, University of Melbourne).
For the standard pathway, interview shortlisting ranks weighted GPA and that unweighted GAMSAT ® score equally. After the interview, course offers weight the interview at 50 per cent, GPA at 25 per cent, and GAMSAT ® (or MCAT, where it is allowed) at 25 per cent (University of Melbourne Handbook, Doctor of Medicine entry requirements). GEMSAS describes the standard-pathway interview as an eight-station multi-mini interview, with each station about five minutes and one assessor (GEMSAS, University of Melbourne). Station style in general is covered in the guide to MMIs.
The handbook allows a limited re-rank for a completed PhD in a health-related or biological sciences discipline, finished within 10 years of starting the MD. It sets a quota of 10 places for that re-rank. Unused places go back into the ordinary pool (University of Melbourne Handbook, Doctor of Medicine entry requirements).
GEMSAS lists no prerequisite subjects for the MD (GEMSAS, University of Melbourne). Applicants still have to meet the university's English language requirements for the course (University of Melbourne, Doctor of Medicine entry requirements). Before clinical placements, students need a police check, a Working with Children Check, and the required immunisations (University of Melbourne, Doctor of Medicine how to apply).
A conditional offer, where the bachelor is not yet finished, is confirmed only if the final GPA holds up. GEMSAS says an applicant whose final GPA falls, but by 0.3 or less, will in most cases still have the offer confirmed (GEMSAS, University of Melbourne).
Graduate Access Melbourne is the equity scheme for the MD. It can re-rank domestic applicants whose undergraduate marks were affected by sustained disadvantage, and it can be relevant to bursaries and Commonwealth Supported Places where those are available. The published categories include rural background, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants, financial hardship, personal difficulties, refugee or humanitarian visa status, and disability or a medical condition (University of Melbourne, Doctor of Medicine entry requirements).
Indigenous entry
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants can use the standard GEMSAS pathway, or the university's Indigenous pathway, which is a direct application. On the Indigenous pathway, eligible applicants are not ranked. The handbook says they are selected if they have a GPA of 5.0 or above and a satisfactory multi-mini interview (University of Melbourne Handbook, Doctor of Medicine entry requirements). GEMSAS says they are not required to sit the GAMSAT ® or apply through GEMSAS when the University of Melbourne is their only preference. Applicants who also want other medical schools use the route those schools publish (GEMSAS, University of Melbourne). The application needs a confirmation of identity sent to the university (University of Melbourne, Doctor of Medicine how to apply).
The Rural Pathway
The Rural Pathway is an end-to-end MD in rural Victoria, based at the Rural Clinical School in Shepparton (University of Melbourne, Doctor of Medicine). It is separate from the broader rural-background priority the school also applies inside Commonwealth Supported Places (GEMSAS, University of Melbourne).
The handbook includes graduates of La Trobe University's Bachelor of Biomedical Science (Medical), and other applicants with a bachelor degree who can document rural origin. Rural origin on this pathway means at least five consecutive years, or 10 years in total, in Modified Monash Model categories MM2 to MM7, with Years 11 and 12 at a school in MM2 to MM7 preferred. When the Rural Pathway is their only preference, applicants are not required to sit the GAMSAT ® or apply through GEMSAS (GEMSAS, University of Melbourne). La Trobe graduates who receive a conditional offer need a final weighted average mark of 70 per cent to confirm it. For other rural-pathway applicants, the handbook weights the rural-specific interview at 70 per cent and GPA at 30 per cent (University of Melbourne Handbook, Doctor of Medicine entry requirements). The course page and the GEMSAS school entry have not always printed the same place count. Read both for the intake you are applying to.
The North Western Pathway
The North Western Pathway is for domestic students from selected Victoria University degrees who have a connection to Melbourne's north and west and want general practice and primary care there. The course page offers up to eight Commonwealth Supported Places, with priority for the Enhanced Primary Care Stream and placements based at the Western Clinical School (University of Melbourne, Doctor of Medicine).
The handbook names the Victoria University courses: Bachelor of Biomedicine, Bachelor of Biomedical Science, Bachelor of Biomedical Science and Exercise Science, Bachelor of Paramedicine, Bachelor of Applied Movement Sciences/Master of Physiotherapy, and Bachelor of Nursing or Bachelor of Midwifery/Bachelor of Nursing. Applicants need a GPA of at least 5, and they need to document residence in the handbook's Tier 1 local government areas or the wider Tier 2 North Western Primary Health Network catchment. They are not required to sit the GAMSAT ®. Offers weight the pathway interview at 70 per cent and GPA at 30 per cent (University of Melbourne Handbook, Doctor of Medicine entry requirements).
If the standard pathway is your route, preparation is the GAMSAT ®. Guaranteed entry, in the next section, does not use that exam. Start with GAMSAT ® preparation when the exam applies to you.
Guaranteed entry at UniMelb
Guaranteed entry at UniMelb is the school-leaver route into the MD. You complete a University of Melbourne undergraduate degree straight after Year 12, or after a deferral the university has granted, and you apply later for the MD without the GAMSAT ®. Students who have transferred from another university are not eligible for a guaranteed entry pathway (University of Melbourne, guaranteed undergraduate to graduate pathways).
These applicants apply to the university, not through GEMSAS. A satisfactory multi-mini interview is required. Someone on the full-fee guarantee who also wants to be considered for other fee types sits the GAMSAT ® and applies through GEMSAS as well. Those applications are considered separately (GEMSAS, University of Melbourne). The exam those standard applications use is explained in what the GAMSAT ® is.
Chancellor's Scholars
Chancellor's Scholars are current or recent University of Melbourne students who entered with an ATAR of 99.90 or above, from an Australian Year 12 or an International Baccalaureate completed in Australia, immediately after Year 12 or with a university deferral. "Recent" means the undergraduate studies were completed within 18 months before 1 January of the year the MD would start. The handbook offers this as a Commonwealth Supported Place for domestic students, and as an international fee place for international students in the same ATAR group. A satisfactory multi-mini interview is required (University of Melbourne Handbook, Doctor of Medicine entry requirements).
The Melbourne Chancellor's Scholarship is the undergraduate award for domestic students at that 99.90 ATAR, and it includes a guaranteed Commonwealth Supported Place in a professional master's when the course's own entry rules are met. Keeping the scholarship requires an average of at least 70 in each half-year study period (University of Melbourne, Melbourne Chancellor's Scholarship). That scholarship condition is separate from the 75 per cent weighted average mark on the full-fee MD route below. The dollar value of the scholarship is on the scholarship page.
Full-fee guarantee and Australian Full Fee Priority
For students who commenced their Melbourne undergraduate degree before January 2027, the university's guaranteed-pathways page describes a full-fee MD place for an ATAR, or notional ATAR, from 99.00 to 99.85, a completed Melbourne undergraduate degree with a weighted average mark of at least 75 per cent, and a satisfactory multi-mini interview. The GAMSAT ® is not required. An applicant who misses those conditions loses the guarantee (University of Melbourne, guaranteed undergraduate to graduate pathways). The handbook states the same full-fee idea for an ATAR of 99.00 or above, with the 75 per cent weighted average mark used to confirm the offer, and the same interview rule (University of Melbourne Handbook, Doctor of Medicine entry requirements).
Students who commence undergraduate study after January 2027 are pointed to a different route: the Australian Full Fee Priority pathway. The how-to-apply page says those candidates apply through the University of Melbourne course application portal and attend a multi-mini interview (University of Melbourne, Doctor of Medicine how to apply). The guaranteed-pathways page says the detailed rules for that newer route are on the Doctor of Medicine entry requirements (University of Melbourne, guaranteed undergraduate to graduate pathways). Read that entry page for the intake you want. The handbook, the pathways page, and the how-to-apply page do not describe the post-2027 route in the same words.
Rise Advanced at UniMelb
The University of Melbourne does not publish a Doctor of Medicine pathway named Rise Advanced. A search for rise advanced unimelb lines up with three different things the university does publish.
Advanced standing
Advanced standing is credit for previous study, sometimes called recognition of prior learning. The Doctor of Medicine entry requirements state that advanced standing is not considered for this degree (University of Melbourne, Doctor of Medicine entry requirements). Previous medical study does not shorten the Melbourne MD. Entry is through one of the pathways above.
Scholar pathways after you are in the MD
Once admitted, students can take the degree further inside the course. In second year they choose the Research Scholar pathway or the Clinical Scholar pathway. Eligible students can also apply to intercalate a PhD, a Master of Public Health, or a Master of Biomedical Engineering with the MD (University of Melbourne, Doctor of Medicine course structure). Those are options after a place in the MD. They are not a Year 12 entry scheme, and they do not replace the GAMSAT ® for a standard-pathway applicant.
Programs that use the name RISE
The Residential Indigenous STEM Experience (RISE) is a week-long on-campus camp for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students in Year 9 and Year 10. It is a science outreach program, not admission to the MD (University of Melbourne, Residential Indigenous STEM Experience).
The Royal Melbourne Hospital, which hosts one of the MD clinical schools, runs a separate RISE program for nurses moving into a specialty area (Royal Melbourne Hospital, RISE program). That program is nursing education for staff already at the hospital.
School-leaver medicine programs that select with the UCAT ® are a different admissions system, explained in UCAT ® for medicine.
Frequently asked questions
Is medicine at the University of Melbourne an undergraduate degree?
The Doctor of Medicine is a four-year graduate degree. The university's pathway is a bachelor degree of about three years, then the MD. Standard entry accepts a bachelor in any discipline, completed within 10 years of starting the MD, or an older bachelor plus a more recent graduate diploma, master's, or PhD. Biomedicine is one possible bachelor degree at Melbourne. It is not the medical qualification.
What GPA and GAMSAT result does Melbourne ask for?
For the standard pathway, GEMSAS publishes a minimum GPA of 5 and a minimum of 50 in each GAMSAT ® section. Those are hurdles. The rank that receives an interview is higher, and it is not a single fixed public cutoff. GPA for this ranking uses the last three years of the bachelor degree, weighted 1, then 2, then 2. Each GAMSAT ® section counts equally. Interview offers combine that GPA and GAMSAT ® equally. Final offers weight the interview at 50 per cent, GPA at 25 per cent, and GAMSAT ® at 25 per cent.
How does guaranteed entry into the Melbourne MD work?
Guaranteed entry is for students who start a University of Melbourne undergraduate degree immediately after Australian Year 12 or the IB in Australia, or after a university deferral. Chancellor's Scholars, at an ATAR of 99.90 or above, are considered for a Commonwealth Supported Place and must pass a multi-mini interview. A full-fee guarantee for students who started before January 2027 uses an ATAR from 99.00 to 99.85, a weighted average mark of at least 75 per cent, and the same interview. The GAMSAT ® is not required. Students starting undergraduate study after January 2027 are directed to the Australian Full Fee Priority pathway, and the current rules are on the university's MD entry page.
Is Rise Advanced a way into medicine at Melbourne?
The university does not list an MD pathway called Rise Advanced. Advanced standing, which is credit for previous study, is not available for the Doctor of Medicine. Research Scholar and Clinical Scholar pathways, and intercalated research degrees, are choices after you already have an MD place. RISE at the university is also the name of a Year 9 and Year 10 Indigenous STEM camp, and the Royal Melbourne Hospital uses RISE for a nursing program.
Do I apply to Melbourne medicine through GEMSAS?
Domestic applicants on the standard pathway apply through GEMSAS, and they are considered only for the fee types they tick. Guaranteed entry, Australian Full Fee Priority, the Indigenous pathway, the Rural Pathway, and the North Western Pathway are direct applications to the university. Indigenous and Rural Pathway applicants who also want another medical school follow that school's application route. International applicants apply to the university. Only international applicants who are outside Australia at the time of application may use the MCAT instead of the GAMSAT ®.
Can earlier study shorten the Melbourne MD?
The university says advanced standing is not considered for the Doctor of Medicine. Previous medical study does not shorten the four years, and you cannot transfer in part-way. You apply through a published pathway and complete the degree.
Does the Melbourne MD require the UCAT?
The published Doctor of Medicine requirements do not use the UCAT ®. Standard entry uses the GAMSAT ®, or the MCAT for some international applicants living overseas, plus an interview if you are shortlisted. Guaranteed entry, the Rural Pathway, the North Western Pathway, and the Indigenous direct pathway do not use the GAMSAT ®. The UCAT ® is the test used by undergraduate medicine programs.
